First of all, thank everyone for their contributions on this forum. I've done 10+ oil changes on my 2005 4.0 Taco (126k miles) but in a senior moment (and spouse was distracting me), I undid the tranny nut instead of the oil nut and immediately saw the red fluid come out. I immediately screwed the nut back in (I'm guessing 1/4 to 1/2 quarts at most was lost). My question is that given that the tranny fluid is over 11 qts in the system, do I need to worry about "topping off" the tranny fluid? Tranny fluid was changed at 85K
    Thanks in advance.

If you can measure what came out, pour the same amount back in. That should get you close. I wouldn't run it low, even a half a quart.

Thanks Winkel. I'd be guessing at the exact amount but if necessary I can just turn the engine on to get to temp and then add tranny fluid til it comes out the check fill hole. I guess better safe than sorry.

I’d say overfill it before the temp procedure so it trickles out of the check plug at the right level and temp. Also, trust me it takes no time to get the trans up to temp in the summer heat, I suggest doing it in the morning and I’m sure you reminded your spouse that this is all their fault! :jpow:

Thanks Micht25. Yes, that is the better order of steps.
