.....they are just replacing the catalytic converter?

You better carry some toilet paper with you because that truck is going to die again on the road. And no doubt it will happen when you need to take a shit.

Curious on the details of what the OP was towing and if he was using ECT.

I'm pretty sure it should have been. If not, that's some fine print at its best type of stuff

Ah, saw in the first post you said you hooked up the motor home and cut your vacation short so I assumed you dropped out while towing.

If they had to replace the cat then you probably have a failing CPS.

Just read my service agreement. If you call the Toyota number, tow is free to nearest dealer. If you used your own tow company, they will only reimburse $150

That would cover about 1 mile.
Warranty states towing is free to nearest dealer or to dealer of your choice if that dealer is within 25 miles of nearest dealer.

Wait .... what just happened?? Truck went into limp mode with a hot tranny light, the dealer wont tow it too far, dealer is now replacing the catalytic converter??

Huh?? I may be slow but how would a bad cat converter have anything to do with the hot tranny other than MAYBE and this is a big stretch - the cat got too hot and heated up the tranny?? Wow... glad that's not my dealer! just sayin

I think it was in response to this, 3 pages back. My apologies, @bobrown14 .

Literally, WTF? Ask why. Don't let them do anything to your truck without a valid explanation. Couldn't get the service foreman to check the fluid? I am sure his boss could. Mention how displeased you are with the service and how you're looking forward to the satisfaction survey. A 9 will ruin that guy's day/week/month. I don't even know what a 1-5 would do.

If they replaced the catalytic converter it might be due to a failing CPS. If they replaced the torque converter then obviously not CPS but a transmission issue.

Truck dropping into limp mode, crazy idle or dying without throwing codes sound like CPS, especially when motor is running in very hot environment.

HIgh trans temp, slip shifting or not shifting at all sound like transmission / torque converter problems. Need to know specifically what dealer replaced.

If I understand correctly the OP was at 10,000 Ft above sea level and at that altitude, the air is very thin and thus the ecm would be doing its best to maintain proper fuel mixture. A rich fuel mixture (thin air) kills a cat converter so I can see how that might have happened, and the engine did shut down and let out some warnings according to the post.
It appears to me that the nearest dealer in the area was aware and did have a clue as to what may have happened as they might be seeing this problem in the area.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Oh the irony, when most of the Moderators on TW don't even own Tacomas, as far as I know, anybody can post here if they're not being derogatory...
