There were multiple transmissions used on 2WD 1st generation Tacos - both 5- and 6-lug.

Which transmission is it that you have?

I have one from a 2001 6lug 2wd tacoma the reason me asking this is because my friend with 01 6lug 4wd tacoma needs a new tranny and was wondering if the tranfer case will bolt up to the 2wd tranny

OK ... In that case it's an A340E to A340F transplant / conversion you're looking to do ...

This question has come up many times on CustomTacos and especially Tacoma Territory, but it's hard to find an example of anyone who's actually completed a successful transplant.

The reason is because there are a lot of details that can turn into 'gotcha' issues with a 340E to 340F.

    For example ...

There are bell housing and output shaft differences between 3RZ and 5VZ versions of both transmissions. If your 2 trannies are for 2 different engines you're going to have to deal with that.

Depending on year and equipment there can be differences in things like kick-down cable location, speed sensor location, support cross member fit-up details, shifter location, and shifter linkages.

If both trannies are 2001 models, the good news is that you won't have to deal with the mismatch between mechanical kick-down cable versus electrical throttle-by-wire connections (which would be a problem if either tranny were from a 2003 or 2004 model).

That's about the extent of what I can tell you ... I'd recommend going over to Tacoma Territory and searching through their forum archives for others' experiences. In particular, search out reports from people who've converted PreRunners to 4WD.

    Hope this helps ...
