    Hi Guys,

Another victim of the throw-out bearing problem. Doing it myself (stealership wants $1200 w/parts), but having problems getting the tranny to come off - starter is off, bolts are out, driveshafts are disconnected. I tried getting a screwdriver between the bell housing and the engine, but I can't really get it int there to work it (too tight).

Any ideas how to get this thing off? I'm using a tranny jack.

I'm starting to become less stoked on the Tacoma's lately. Mine has door lock problems, the clutch chirp and my front wheel bearing went out. My old truck was recalled because the frame was shot........

Never thought much about domestic trucks, but this toyota isn't really giving me such a "Oh What a Feeling!".

Thanx - tried that but no luck. I can get the bottom to separate by about an inch. The top is stuck. I can really get up there to pry it at all - too many hoses and stuff in the way and front the engine bay everything is hidden out of sight behind the engine.

I looked up in the bottom and it looks like the flywheel is stuck in the bell housing. I keep prying but it doesn't want to budge. I'm afraid if I tug too much it might damage the bell housing. Not sure how to get this thing off. I've tugged, pulled, swore......Any ideas. If it doesn't come off soon I might give up and take it to the dealer.

    What YEAR??????
My 91 was a BITCH to get apart--ARE you sure you have all the bolts removed.
TRIPLE CHECK. Supported the tranny underneath(Blocks and plywood).Moved it back and forth to break it loose--Then it came off easily.

I think you MISSED a bolt on the top--Bottom comes out--top is secured somewhere.
    RECHECK the bolts.
my 91 had a tough one to find on the top.

It's in neutral, all the bolts are out.......?!?!?!? I've spent at least 6 hours swaying, prying, swearing and repeating. I tried the pulling from the rear axle with a strap....nothing.....stuck......Looks like it's going the dealer - make this someone else's problem.

If you have not put it back together yet--give it one more look. Run your hand all the way around the bell housing.especially where it is stuck. What year is your truck?
Here is the link for all trucks--find yours--there will be a dissassembly page.
Hate to see you give up--BEEN THERE!!
Take a break-look again. somtimes a time out helps--REALLY!! Just from personal experience-GOOD LUCK BUDDY!!!!

Thanx! Yeah, I was more than a little frustrated yesterday. A few brewskis and night off from it helped more than anything. The truck is an '05 DC with the 6 speed MT. Try one more time today, then I give up.....

sounds like you have too much pressure on the trans with the jack? Maybe try lowering it a bit.

Ahh!!! Finally found the mystery bolt. It was way behind the engine - took an hour of "Stevie Wondering" it to get a socket on it. All is good, except one problem that I tried earlier (no luck) and thought I'd come back it. Getting the F'ing shifter off. Toyota WTF??? This is the most F'd up design ever! I've tried everything...WD 40, using a wrench, trying to get pliers on it, pushing down with chisel to bite into the metal, and then hammering with the chisel, while pushing down. I can't get the cap to turn. I've spent another hour dicking around trying to get that sucker off. It wiggles a bit but it won't budge.

Any ideas??? This truck is starting to drive me insane!

Toyota has very tight tolerances in assembly. Thats why they dont fall apart like the others.:D

Remove the 4 bolts from the shifter flange, and remove the whole thing. Cover the hole to keep unwanted extras out of the tranny.

Yes, thanks guys! Much appreciated! Everything is back together again and now I'm just trying to line up the tranny to the engine. I replaced the clutch, but for some reason it didn't come with an alignment tool. I used the socket with an extension method to line it up under the pressure plate.

Having lots of trouble getting it back on though. I can peek up through the hole in the side of the bell housing and can see the shaft bumping into the splines on the clutch, but the sucker doesn't want to go. I've tried realigning the jack a 100X, but no luck. Should I lower the the tranny again and see if the clutch somehow slide down? It doesn't have a whole lot of play behind the pressure plate. Awkward and finicky.......

If you can get to a parts store like Advanced or Oreilly's you can borrow one. It usually entails renting the tool.
