First off props to all that have added a cooler!

Since I’ve gathered information here and there from Tacomaworld I’m giving a little back a bit. Hopefully these photos and other trans photo can help people on an install or decide to make the trans cooler move.

I’m in AZ and seen temps this summer with no cooler between 200 and 210.

I’ve seen a 30-40 degree drop in trans temps with an added cooler.
I went with a setrab slimline and made brackets from aluminum and stainless.
    Happy trans cooler posting!

    Nice work!
I’m not in to the fixin what ain’t broke, but this is a legit mod, especially in that heat and folks towing. My 2019 came with one, but if it didn’t, I’d do it.

I'm in the valley - and you're sayin just running standard you see temps 200~210 ? -
I need to get a guage just to check and see what I'm getting just runnin around town.

I suspect towing anything even around 1200 pounds would be a bit more - ?

We put a tranny cooler on the wife's 2017 Subaru and used it for towing, which by the way was still getting 26mpg + and it ran like
a champ. The Tacoma will now be the primary tow vehicle for the little camper.

What did this run you - this idea that the Tacoma doesn't need one is a bit sketchy for me here in the valley.... we do run a little hot down here as you know.

Its funny, literature I recently read , Toyota still lists “transmission cooler” or “ATF cooler” among the features of its tow package.

They used the same language to describe my 2009 OR which actually had the EXTERNAL trans cooler, vs my ‘21 which we all know Toyota quietly deleted a few years ago.

Even my salesman kept assuring me that I would have one, as “it says so in the literature.”

So technically yes my new transmission will be cooled , just not with a dedicated unit.

The fact that it is an add with the towing package means it needs it if you’re going to tow. Toyota in its wisdom(quest for more money) deleted the cooler. You can purchase a transmission temperature guage that plugs into monitor plug and get a whole lot of information that you may or may not need, stay cool

Pinning the tstat open while towing has resulted in a 10* - 12* drop in pan operating temp and a quicker recovery in TC temp as measured with a scangauge.

I have a mishimoto with a fan. I need to change it to a different more efficient design. I also live in az. Pretty easy to see 215 trans temps for me.

Are you talking about one of those scanner/gauge tools that plugs into the OBD2 port under the dash?

I wouldn't blame Toyota. The Landcruiser never lost the transmission cooler. Tundras and Tacomas did. It was very poor decision by Mike Sweers. (IMHO)

The 200-210 degree temps was with the t-stat pinned. I pinned it to get a rough idea of tranny temps.

here is the scanguage 2 pic. That is the 20+ min morning commute temp.

it will definitely be hotter with towing. This truck is just a runner for me so it’s always empty with stock tires.

I’ve had great luck with setrab coolers so I went that route. The cooler alone was 350ish plus hose and fittings. There are certainly more economical options. My son is putting a derale 10000 on this weeken and Lots of people using hayden too.

Radiator cooler is first, then oil to air, back to trans. Pic is a different cooler, but should show proper flow.

The upper line is the inlet, lower is the outlet. Best to tap off the outlet. And if you're going to be towing at all might as well install a trans temp gauge while you're at it.

I did this mod on my 2019, but it's a 2.7L so it didn't come with any ATF cooler. Using the ScanGuage to monitor my Temps I was hitting the 200s on my daily commute here in SoCal driving up several steep grade. I used LPD4589. My ATF cooler is oriented with the inlet / outlet to the side. The bottom of the cooler was attached to the ATF outlet from the radiator and the top of the cooler fed in to the return line to the ATF. This is what was written in the instructions with the ATF cooler to have maximum efficiency. The highest I reached was a stop and go commute from OC to Camarillo on the 405 where I touched 158 degrees.
