Recently I changed the transmission fluid I was guided by a Hanes manual. I drained old fluid replaced filter and gasket then added new fluid. I put 3 gallons in let the truck warm up then released the overflow bolt and let drain until a trickle then tightened the bolt up. Now my truck is shifting hard from neutral to drive the truck jumps. Does anyone know the correct procedure for replacing trans fluid. It’s a 2013 Tacoma v6 4wd with tow package. My guess is that because the bolt says check and not overflow there should always be enough in the transmission for some to drain to check the condition of the fluid. Before I drained the excess there was no hard shifting so I’m thinking that maybe I should just add until it doesn’t hard shift and then be done with it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

You basically did a pan dump, a pan dump done correctly should have been a tad over 3 qts.

    3 gallons, yikes!

Not sure about 3 gallons... You mightve put in 2-1/4 gallons too much.

So I’ve put too much I can deal with that but exactly how do I go about correcting this. What steps do I take to know for a fact that I’ve got the right amount.

Can adding too much result in the hard shifts I’m experiencing? It’s only from neutral to drive and it shifts just fine while driving.

It’s not that easy. You need to get the transmission into a certain temperature range then pull the check bolt.

I did that but if I’ve put over two gallons too much it should drain the two gallons out but it might drain a quart then it stops I really don’t know what to do now

You need to read the transmission temp. Either a Bluetooth adapter and app or scan gauge or put it in temp check mode. Water temp isn’t the same.

When I did mine I drained what was in the pan. Poured it into a gallon jug. Mark a line on the jug. Use that to measure what pump s out of the transmission via cooler return line. Ended up using 12 qrts.
