Transfer Box 4WD actuator... how to align.

    Hi Guys

I've done a strip down on my transfer case; it's from a 5 speed JDM Hilux Surf which has the 'one touch' 4WD selector with straight H - N - L shifter. This transfer actuator was not used on any US market 4Runners AFAIK, but it was on some 1st gen V6 Tacomas, so I would really appreciate your help!

I've had a search and only found this:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/testing-expensive-looking-4wd-part.427674/#post-12273594

The guy here had his actuator apart, and seemed to be able to re-install it without a problem, but in case anyone here is really familiar with this part, I'd like to ask a few questions...

So, I was testing my 2WD to 4WD actuator.

When it winds the rod in (shifting into 2WD), there is a limit switch which stops the motor.

When it winds the rod out, there seems to be no limit switch built into the actuator unit itself, I assume it must be done via the 4WD computer once one or more switches tell it that the transfer box is in 4WD. This is just my assumption however.

So, when I was testing it, winding the road out, the damn thing pops itself clean off the shift rod and out of the transfer box extension housing.

I took the small triangular access cover off the unit, took out the pinion and installed the actuator back on the rod.

Then, I wound the actuator rod in until it was on the limit switch, made sure the rod was in the fully retracted 2WD position, and dropped the pinion back in.

My assumption is that this is how it should be... can anyone confirm this, please?

    Thanks!

Answering my own question... yes, this is exactly how it should work.

I was excited to see this thread, but.

How do you re-time the gear for the transfer case after removing the motor to solder and clean.

I was hoping that's what your message was about, I gotta fix this thing...

I've explained the gear / rod position in the original post (my assumption was correct).

I did not remove the motor from drive gears, but as it's an electric motor, I don;t imagine the motor position matters relative to the gear position. Only the gear / rod position.
