    It's 75w85 for the diffs.
The 75W transer gear oil is way thinner than 75w85.
If you take it to a dealer you'll likely get 75w90 in both.

OP. My transfer case was missing gaskets on the drain and fill.

I would have assumed that, too, but the manual specifies something different. It calls for 75W-85 GL5 for front and rear, 75W "LF" (whatever that is) for the t-case.

T-case fluid feels and smells nothing like gear oil. There is no sulphur smell and it's not as slippery as gear oil. I'm assuming that's so the synchros can function properly for 4wd on the fly changes. It smelled like used peanut oil. I wanted fries after I changed mine out.

I changed mine out awhile ago, just to do a metal bits and particles flush when I flushed front and rear diffs. maybe at 5k? or 7K? I really can't remember now. It was cold out. Since then, I do know I've put a good 300 miles of off road use and it's been smooth sailing since the change.

you need a 10mm hex socket. I purchased a 1/2 inch drive socket 10mm hex from HD for around $3.00. It was hard to break open so I'm glad I had the 1/2 inch socket

I used Ravenol 75w. Website on ravenol says it meets specs for toyota 75w. Order 2 bottles, in case you spill some. Each bottle is 1/4 the price of toyota LF on Amazon so, getting 2 won't break the bank. I did many hours of research on the viscosity specs of the fluids on the market before I pulled the trigger on the Ravenol. The ravenol felt and smelled very similiar to it, if not just like it.

Since I changed out to Ravenol, it seems like the shifts into 4wd are a little smoother, but that's probably all placebo effect.

    good luck.

If dealer takes care of it, just take the fill plug off and take a whiff. make sure it doesn't smell like diff oil.

75w85 and 75w90 basically the exact same thing. It's harder to find 75w85 that's why it's easier to go with mobile 1 75w90. Ran it in my 2013 with no issues.

    I'm not disagreeing...
But, with the problems these diffs have been having, I bet Toyota Corp would disagree...
Just a prudent precaution if still under warranty.

Looks to be leaking from drain to me from that pic, gasket on side looks dry.

Considering that the gasket seems to be a major hangup for some, and that it can be easily made from gasket stock material for dimes & nickels vs expensive oem gasket in just 10-15 minutes by any tech, I'd have to agree, ridiculous!!

The cost of rentals alone would be way more than it would take the tech to make one, unless they don't trust them to be able to do so. But I could be wrong, this (car rental) expense could be a massive tax write-off for insane profits on these trucks.

    Cheers!

    Great find!

I'm replacing my Transfer case oil when I reach 30k to flush the break-in contaminants and be done, since it is LF (long life) rated.
But I was never going to use the ridiculously expensive Toyota brand, that price is an insane ripoff lol!

    Big help Barcared, thanks!
    Cheers!

same thing happened to me. Dealer tried to say i hit something that caused the bolt to loosen! I called corporate and all they did was refill the transfer case and tighten the bolt. Since the truck drove fine I didn't make a fuss but I originally wanted them to replace it

Since I'd have to order the right kind of gear oil (and pay $$$), I decided to just go through the dealer. They agreed to squeeze me in tomorrow since I have a road trip scheduled for the weekend. I may end up doing that in a rental car, but oh well. They say they need to keep the truck for at least half a day to diagnose the problem. I'll let you know what I find out.

that's the best deal I could find on the gear oil at walmart.com online, very expensive stuff, I used it in my rear diff only then used Supertech 75w90 semi syn in the front diff and transfer case since the 4 wheel drive gets used seldomly
