Hey there, I was looking on ebay at transfer cases, and see that some of them say "for 6cy without differential lock." So what exactly does that mean? My 1999 PreRunner has the oem locking rear differential, so it means the transfer case would not work for a 4wd conversion?

Let me phrase that differently :deadhorse: : is it due to the fact that if you had your rear locker in operation, the t-case has no way to cope with the locked axles?

As someone who went through the 4WD conversion, I highly recommend you buy a transmission with a transfer case already mated. There are so many different variables when it comes to the right transfer case buying one by itself is just a pain.

For example: the v6 and I4 transfer case are different, manual v. auto will be different, j-shift v. ADD will be different, some have an intermediate coupler housing, etc etc.

EDIT: Actually, there does appear to be some correlation. The diff lock only operates in 4LO if I recall correctly. Just don't plug any of the transfer case sensors in and you should be fine.

All you have to do is swap the sensor.

The only difference of the “w diff lock “ and “w/o” is the sensor. If you get one “w/o” all you do is remove the plug and install your old sensor

Right but he didn't have a transfer case to begin with. He's doing a 4x4 swap.

In that case it doesn’t matter. Can use either transfercase

Just don’t attach the sensor wires to anything

Yep. People who usually do the 4x4 swaps don't even bother hooking up the transfer case sensors since it's completely unnecessary - there is no wiring harness or 4WD computer for them to hook up to on PreRunners. I actually used my transfer case sensors to light up custom 4HI, 4LO, and N lights I put in the instrument cluster. All they do is complete a ground, really.

+1 finding a t case with trans. I'm not 100% sure but there are different spline count and length on 4 cyl vs v6 and some say man vs auto. I will verify when I pull my trans out of my 2.7. I have a v6 manual t case also

BartMaster1234, you grabbed an instrument cluster as well, then?

No I used my original one. I custom made a lens in Photoshop and printed it out on several layers of plastic transparencies to replace the unused cluster lights. Tacomas have never had the ability to indicate on the cluster what mode of 4WD you're in, I did some custom wiring and fabrication to get this to work.

So, how many 4wd Tacomas were produced without ADD? Or, what are the pros/cons of ADD?
