I personally wouldn't use any of these cheap products sold on Amazon. Id prefer OEM parts purchased from a reliable source. You're already reducing costs by not paying labor so might as well buy OEM components.

For all you know that cheaper Amazon actuator could be the exact same unit the Toyota parts counter is selling. The risk to find out is all on you!

It'd be nice to find a used one at a salvage yard but I think they tend to keep those with the transfer cases.

Dead as in destroyed? Or dead as “the 4wd it’s not responding to your command” dead?

really depends on how easy it is to get to.

if it's easy to get to, non-critical, in that i won't kill myself, or others if the part fails(in this case, 4x4 just won't work), i'll absolutely save the money.

^Need to disassemble the transfer case to replace the shift actuator.

Not to mention the actuator needs to be taken apart to get it on the shift actuator. (while keeping the internal gears in time).

Dude I buy parts on Amazon all the time. My rule of thumb is: Is the part massively cheaper? Red alert, do not want.

I also will click on the other sellers tab sometimes and order stuff that is coming from a dealership parts dept that sell on amazon.

They probably won’t let you open it up to see if it’s been flooded before, I would never buy a junked one.

They're under $500 from Japan and UAE distributors. Goes to show you Toyota USA's profit margins.

This is how I do it normally. I think swapping this is a labor intensive ordeal so I would stick with oem or aisin aftermarket on this part. Would suck to be stuck or stranded because 4x4 wouldn't work due to a junky Amazon part

I got a transfer case out of a salvage pickup shipped to my house for 375. Comes with the actuator.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
You don't have to disassemble the actuator to replace, you have to disassemble the transfer case, then you install the actuator as a complete unit.
