dude, the gaskets cost .10 cents each lol. Why not change them out? If you keep reusing them they will eventually wear out and can cause a leak or plug to come lose. Cheap insurance to just swap it out each time. I bought a pack of 20 gaskets off Amazon for a few bucks.

I used to change out to new ones but I actually have reused the old gaskets on the transfer case, copper one on front diff.,auto tranny pan gasket, oil pan gasket at least 5 times and haven't had a trickle of oil leaking, I only change out the 3 crush washers 2 rear diff, one is the fill hole front diff that's it. I like to live dangerously:D

I'm sure they're good for awhile, they say you should change them out every time but I doubt that's necessary. Probably good to do it every few changes though just to be safe.

Same here...but no towing, so 75-90 all the way around.

Manual and automatic have the SAME transfer case. No difference.

Yes there are. The 2-4 shifter is synchronized. The high-low is NOT.

Are you absolutely certain that you changed the oil in the transfer case and not the transmission itself? You won't be able to feel ANY difference in "shift quality" by changing the transfer case oil, since the transfer case shift is activated by a servo motor.

He's got an automatic so I sure hope he didn't put the Redline MT90 in it lol.

But yeah, it's probably just placebo...changing the tcase fluid is good for the tcase but you aren't going to feel any difference. Not like you will if your transmission needs new fluid.

Actually, he has a manual, his DAD has an automatic, and seems that he wanted OP to do a transfer case oil change on that one as well. Hope OP gets back here before he goes and messes up his dad's truck.

You can use GL5 75W90 in all four boxes if so desired (front diff, manual transmission, T-case, rear diff).

GL4 damaging synchros appears to be prehistoric information. Toyota has allowed GL5 in the manual transmission since the first Tacoma in 1996. It says so right in the owner's manual.
    1996: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM35704U/xhtml/OM35704U_OM0023.html?locale=en
    2007: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM35869U/xhtml/OM35869U.html?locale=en

Of course with the manual transmission, tactile feel is important, and MT-90 will be better in that aspect.

On the other hand, since MT-90 is formulated specifically for transmissions, using it in a diff, especially one with mechanical limited-slip, may not work well. If your dad's truck is a TRD Sport, don't use MT-90 in the rear diff. ;)

The shafts are turning at the same speed which is why you can engage/disengage 4Hi while moving (note recommendation to be moving in a straight line with no wheel slip) but there is no brass sychro ring in the transfer case.

You are making a fool of yourself by trying to press this point, since you are quite incorrect.
Check the FSM on page TF-11.
Next time, I suggest you read the FSM in advance of saying foolish things.

Before I changed the rear diff, I could feel a loss of power at 4k rpms, after changing there's no loss. Must have been pretty degraded to resist fast movement of the drive shaft.

So why are you the only one saying red line in the AT isn't a good idea. Why did others say it's ok, not everyone can be correct...
