Transmission 2016-2023- 6 SPEED AUTOMATICS COULD BE LOW ON FLUID DIRECTLY FROM FACTORY

We need more reports from the guys with the 2018,s ????? Low or not low ?
Its a proven fact the 17,s came from the factory low on fluid
This thread Started a couple years ago . Need to know if I should keep it alive or shut it down
I will leave the thread open for a bit longer so the boys with the 2018 trucks get a chance to voice their opinion

 

Just bought an 18 quad cab. Now I'm paranoid. Lol. Going to attempt to check it myself since I dont want to deal with dealership BS. Just have to wait for a decent day weatherwise as I have an immobile project in the garage.

 

anyone having trouble with the 19's? have these issues been resolved

 

If you could wait I'm going to push for mine to be checked manually. Hunting gears, strong surging from D to R and vice versa, clunking/surge when coming to a stop. Made in baja mexico, prod date 2/18. Bought in June 18 and has just over 5k miles.

 

Has anyone reported any issues with the 6MT? I know this posts specifically emphasizes on the AT.
However, I'm having trouble when shifting in to 2nd gear. It's kind of clunky.

No !! unfortunately, the issues discussed in this post " have not " been resolved by Toyota .

 

2017 Access Cab TRD OR w/ Tow Package sitting at 30k miles. Always had a slight delay when going from P to D/R but dealership did the TSB and said it was good. Currently driving cross country towing a UHAUL trailer. Drove 700 miles yesterday and everything seemed normal. Woke up this morning and went to leave the hotel and as soon as I accelerated from a stop there was a loud CLUNK noise coming from the truck. Local dealership in the town I stopped said they couldn’t fit me in, so I kept driving home and all sounds normal now that it’s all warmed up. Called local dealership at home to make an appointment to drop the truck off to get it checked. He brushed me off saying it’s probably just a noise coming from the trailer. I’ve towed trailers thousands of miles- the noise 100% was coming from the truck. He said to drop the truck off Monday and “they will look at it”. How can I ensure they don’t just waste my time by keeping my truck half a day and then just saying it’s good?

 

Hop under the truck and paint the fill plug so you know its been tampered with

 

Please, keep this thread open. I also purchased a 2018 OffRoad and it has the exact same symptoms as NMTrailRider. It is a 6 Speed Automatic and when I am slowly crawling out of my tight garage door in reverse with my foot on the brake, the engine surges and I quickly hit the break harder. It's very un-nerving.

I also think it "clunks" a t bit too loudly when sitting still and shifting from R to D and back. I think there is way too much slack somewhere in the drive train. I have had this looked at and will get their response up on TW.

 

I don't want to read through 54 pages... can anyone provide a picture of the OBDII port with the correct pins jumped to check the fluid temp? Also, how many times do you have to shift from D to N? 3 times rapidly?

Excellent, thank you! I’m tempted to check mine this weekend on my 2018 with a little over 4K miles, for the peace of mind that it was done myself. But if it’s low, then I also want it documented at the dealer. Any thoughts?

 

Go ahead and check it yourself but dont add any fluid if you find out its low .
Allow the dealer to perform the same task and see if they also tell you the fluid is low .
From there , you can get a written explanation of what the dealer found when they checked your fluid

I have a quick question for you since you seem to be well educated on the subject. According to the thread you linked, the author states this:

Is this 100% accurate? When I initiate the fluid temp check and once “D” is illuminated, when I pull the plug, fluid should initially come gushing out and if it only trickles then it is in fact low?

 

I am not sure he used the best choice for words .
The fluid needs to lightly stream out the hole .

 

I’m going to check the level on my 2017 this weekend. I have OBD Fusion set up to read A/T Temp 1 and A/T Temp 2 in real time. Anyone know that temp the onboard test circuit uses 1 or 2?
They do not read the same temp at the same time. One lags the other by about ten degrees.

 

Pan temp, which is the one you want, will generally be a few degrees lower than the Torque Converter temp. The latter will fluctuate quite a bit depending upon load/shifting.

 

I found the factory instructions for T/S. Using Temp #1 my truck was 3 cups low on fluid. USA build.

 

Was experiencing harsh downshift from 2nd to 1st gear. Truck is at dealer now and they determined the fluid level was low. The truck has 5300 miles. What now? Was irreversible damage done to the transmission by driving it low on fluid? Why was it not checked before delivery? Shame on Toyota for this obvious mistake!
