Nothing yet... Bought it with TWO miles on it!!!
On my transmission, the tech depressed a plunger on the external valve. He held the valve in by placing a pick in a small hole. I am not sure if this would be in the open or closed position.
After he depressed the plunger, he then began the check and I was still low.

OK , which one of you guys have the actual fill procedure for a 2016 ?
Can you post it up so we can hack out any issues .
In my mind , when the truck was at the factory , they didnt pin the thermostat .
This would cause the truck to be low by 3/4 of a quart because the transmission cooler wouldn't be filled .
Paint your overflow plug before you take your truck in . This way you can tell the dealer checked the fluid

This was also a 2nd gen problem
You can read about it here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...is-low-on-fluid-directly-from-factory.312718/

This seems to also be a 2nd gen issue with the under filled transmissions, mine was low 3/4 quart also!
Had been having issues since early on, finally got the dealer to check and top off the trans.
Seems like Toyota doesn't want to pay the dealer for this, unless a "real " issue is found!

Manual tranny is one thing, and OK but to have to go thru all this just to chk fluid on automatic is just complete lame bullshit. Yeah, I read the EXCUSE........

"An ATF filling procedure is used in order to improve the accuracy of the ATF level when the transmission is being repaired or replaced. As a result, the oil filler tube and the oil level gauge used in the conventional automatic transmission have been discontinued, eliminating the need to inspect the fluid level as a part of routine maintenance."

Another way to put the responsibility on the consumer when it blows up unless you paid the dealershit money to "say" they checked it. So much asstarded nonsense.

    Thanks for this post...

I got mine TRD Sport 4x4 in Oct 2015, and under 2000 miles in Nov 2015 the truck completely stop. In the dash I got the engine light on and oil pressure low. Took it to the dealer, after some diagnose (fuel injection) and been completely apart they put it back together and work fine again. Now Feb 2016 it happened again same as before, I got the engine light on and oil pressure low, plus A/F Fluid warning. was not able to drive. Took it to the dealer last week, and still awaiting from Toyota, to sent an specialist to the dealer.

Eric the Car guy has a pretty good thought process regarding warranty repairs, and when watching this video I thought of this thread and why it seems like the A/T fluid isn't getting checked.

Has anyone disconnected their battery to reset the transmission?
Im wondering if theres any initial shifting pattern that has to be done after? Or anything?

I finally checked my transmission today after making sure I read everything I could here on TW. Sure enough mine is definitely low - no overflow while in temperature range. I even let the transmission exceed the temperature range for several minutes after the "D" started blinking, then pulled the plug again. Still no overflow! Damn! So I'm debating whether I should go buy the fluid and a pump or bring to the dealer. I know I should bring it to the dealer to document the problem, but well, I think you guys know how I feel. I know I expected better from Toyota. At least they should admit they screwed up by posting a TSB by now for crying out loud. BTW, mine was built in San Antonio.

I checked my trans fluid level today. It was about 3/4 of a quart low. I put 1/2 quart in before I checked it based on recommendations in other posts and because I was experiencing the delay from R to D in the mornings. So, I was 95% sure it was low. I really did not want to use the jumper wire on the OBDII port so I purchased the UltraGauge only to find out that it IS NOT for 3rd gen Tacomas. Their sites states "2012+". The UG shows "err" for the trans temp. The UG rep said Toyota changed the codes for the 2016s. Anyway, I ended up using the jumper method. It worked just as described. Once it was in the proper temp range, I checked the fluid level....no drainage. I added the other 1/2 quart in but could not get the temp back down so I let it sit over night. Checked the fluid level first thing this morning and it was over serviced. I let it drain until there was only a "trickle" coming out. I took the truck for a test drive.....wow, what a difference. There was very little delay shifting from R to D. Also the shifting on the road seems more solid. In hindsight, I should have put an entire quart in before I started the process. It takes a long time for the fluid to cool back down and start the process over.

Update from Feb 20th. I decided to buy a quart of WS fluid from the dealer and a pump from Harbor Freight. My story is very similar to the previous poster. Pumped in a half quart and checked. No overflow! Pumped in the rest of the quart and checked again even though the "D" was flashing. Plenty of overflow. Let it cool overnight and checked again. No overflow when D appeared but it started dripping before the D started flashing. I figured that is good. The total amount mine was low was 3/4 quart. After 2 days, of driving the delay from R to D has almost disappeared. Also, the shuddering I was having while accelerating through 4th gear seems to have diminished, although I can still feel it sometimes on a smooth road. I'll update later if things change, but as of now I'd say the issues I was having were related to the transmission being low on fluid.

I have an TRD OR AC with the tow package. Seems from other posts the biggest offender for low tranny fluid.

450 miles on truck, trans. smooth all through gears up and down.
ECT, Sport. Drive, all seems fine. Drive used to reach for higher gears when driving like grandma but got much better when not babying tranny and driving normal (for me). Tried highway-up down hills, also up down rolling hills at 40-50, around town with lights every half mile or so.

Cold (below 30 degrees) reverse out of my driveway up steep hill, brake, then shift into D proceed downhill, smooth no issues. Tried up the hill too.

This thread makes me paranoid. Seems to put out vibe all new owners should check no matter what. At least that is what I am getting.

Do I need to check my transmission fluid?
