Transmission 2016-2023- 6 SPEED AUTOMATICS COULD BE LOW ON FLUID DIRECTLY FROM FACTORY

Mine starts with a 3 and Im experiencing a few transmission issues. Its going in tomorrow at 8am. THe truck has 1800 miles on it.

 

I posted this in another transmission fluid thread. But Toyota last year came up with a procedures to check the AT fluid level while the truck is hot and normal operating temp, and doesn't take very long at all. It does require some special tools buy Toyota.

The good service centers who keep up to date and want to do well by their customers most likely have this equipment. I did see one poster actually observed the new procedure.

I watched the video when you posted it .
With this said , its rather clear that not many dealerships are using the new filling tool
In the dealerships eyes , why spend the money , when they can make the customer leave his truck overnight .
This is only my opinion mind you

 

Very true, but that might explain the guys that have had the dealers check quickly and those who didn't want to do it or had to leave the truck overnight. Mabe tell the service manager he needs to get with it.

Also most of all the Toyota AT are this way, so it would make sense that they update there tools. But then again. When car dealer looked up in the dictionary is defines as dishonest, con-artists, etc. Then who knows.

 

Incompetence by....

Multiple plants? Multiple workers? Robots?

Plant managers working for
top Toyota high brass to save $ on fluid to make extra millions.?

And put in jeopardy the reputation of the most reliable truck every made, especially in a rollout year?

Back end, dealers, know of the problems but are blocking and hiding the problem?

 

Had mine looked at and checked by a certified Toyota tech at the dealer today whom I honestly believe was being truthful when he said the fluid level was actually slightly overfilled. Is it possible he checked wrong? Maybe. All I know is that my trans is slow to engage on a cold block when going from reverse to drive.

Im in a bit of a pickle.

I am going to bet you a case of internet beer that your transmission is still low .
With this said , you dont have many miles built up on your transmission and chances of damage are lower than most members .
Call corporate first , then print out the proper procedure so you know the technician is following the 2016 fill guideline by the book , then re -schedule an appointment where you can leave your truck for a cold morning fluid check .
As honest as the technician was that checked your fluid the first time , I do not believe the procedure was done properly

 

I had noticed on several occasions the slow to engage in D on cold mornings. Had my 5k checkup and the sheets are all signed off and the trans is on there twice. Found this forum and did my own check, 3/4 quart low. Sport with tow package. The check was pretty easy to do, doesn't take long to get to check temperature, no way a dealership could do it without a few hours of cooling time. I had called my dealer and they just said to bring it in and they would check it, they didn't seem to have a clue about the trans temp having to cool off or had they heard of this low fluid issue.

 

I would venture to bet that all they did was plug it up to the computer. This was my experience two Saturdays ago. The service team rep swore the computer is way more accurate than checking it manually. He was not happy to work on my truck since I didn't buy it from them and bought it from a dealer where my parents live that is not close to me. I was out of there in an hour. I am going to do a check on Friday manually myself to see if it is low.

 

I just got mine back from the dealer. They would not do the check until they verified the slipping. I left it for 4 days and they gave me a loaner (2016 Tundra 1794 Edition - very nice). It sat outside over the weekend and it's been in the 30s yesterday and today. When they checked it today they felt the slip and verified the low fluid level and adjusted it. Here is what the owners portal says about the repair.

I park in a garage at work. Concrete parking garages are the coldest place on earth. I've felt it after the workday when leaving and driving uphill on the parking deck. I'll see tomorrow. Mine never felt a delay going from R to D.

 

Just fired mine up 30mins ago after fluid adjustment yesterday. No more clunk and noticeably better shift performance.

 

Any idea what kind of damage and wear this has caused owners? Smells of something worth demanding an extended or lifetime transmission warranty over. They really screwed the pooch on this.

 

I am sure this question is going through the heads of every member who had a low fluid problem or is still having issues .
Your mileages are all different . It would be nearly impossible for Toyota to track the damage created
This is something you guys who own these trucks need to hack out with your dealers/ Toyota and is why I asked you guys to create a paper trail in the poll . Unfortunately , it came to the point where some of you guys had no choice but to add oil to the truck yourself because you knew you were doing damage and the dealer was doing nothing to help .
With this said , there are enough of you on Tacoma World that had low fluid problems to take advantage of a situation like this and try for extended warranty / lifetime warranty etc .
I suggest you guys get together and push for lifetime warranty on your transmissions at bare minimum .
There was mention of a petition the other day .

Who are you all contacting when you say corporate? I took mine in and they wouldn't even check it for me and just told me it was idling fine so it wasn't low, bunch of BS. I am going to take it to another dealership if possible for my Toyota Care maintenance.

 

What damage could be done if it was over filled??

 

Excessive over filling can cause foaming which causes air within the transmission pump .The air would cause the transmission pump to cavitate to the point where you could hear the vehicle coming from a mile away .
There are anti-foaming agents in new transmission fluid to prevent foaming . In all the years I have been working with transmissions I have only seen a couple transmissions that were accidentally over filled .
Some valve body re-calibration kits request to slightly overfill some transmissions to compensate for engineers who still think the world is flat .
The engineer designing the transmission pan didn't take into account that some vehicles go off road . This actually happens a lot .
Adding the extra fluid would prevent a 4x4 transmission from falling into neutral when going up steep hills and turning tight corners .
I dont recommend this be done to the Toyota transmission mind you .
There is a fill procedure for your truck on the first page

I have seen thousands that were " Under filled " or leaking to the point where the transmission actually failed .
Much more damage is caused by under filling an automatic transmission
