It's up on the pass. side of the tranny....it says "WS" on it...!! I think it's a 24mm socket required..

    Soooooo

Today I spent all day at longo Toyota El Monte California and they found that I was 1 quart low.

Initially they did not want to check it and said it was normal after I test drove it with the master tech. But when I kept pushing the subject he was able to replicate my problem of

R to drive and clunking and hesitation

I told them its worst in the morning. They did the computer check and everything was normal but I told them to physically check it and when they did sure enough it was 1 fucking quart low

I have 3263 miles and they've taken care of it but I hope no long term damage came out of it

splitbolt, Thanks, I have read all the posts I can find on this topic and still cannot find the refill, the photo in the second link is of an "06" 2wheel drive, mine is an "09" 4x4 and the fill plug is not in that position, I do appreciate you taking the time! Thanks!

I've got a TRD Off-Road, Access Cab, Tow Package, Auto that came from the Texas plant, but, not experienced any problems as others are describing. Transmission feels great. Should I still get it checked out or would I be feeling it if it's a problem? I plan to do some fairly heavy towing once I'm over the 500 mile mark.

I'm not experiencing any real noticeable issues with the tranny, except a slight hesitation to up shift after going over a hill... it might take a 1/4 Km of downhill road before going up again... I'm thinking I'm just a little low....

Talked to the dealer today and got the same old "It'll cost ya to check it manually" routine....BUT the master Tech did say that he'd make sure it was checked at scheduled 8,000 km service where they check the floor mats and wipers and washer fluid.... The kicker is, I did not spend the $800.00 for the so-called "Toyota care" (check my floormat bullshit), so I have to pay for the service inspection... What a load of crap.

The service guy said that I'm just paranoid...The tranny has a 100,000km warranty.... Don't worry about it..!

I asked him if he'd mind if I drained 1 liter out of his tranny and that I'd put fresh stuff back in next year.... No response.

Basically saying that if I pay $200.00 for the 8,000km inspection, they will check it for free..... great deal, eh..??

I bought a liter of ATF WS and said see you guys later.....

When the snow leaves, I'll be checking it..

Well I just dropped my truck off at the dealership. They said it had to sit overnight to cool off because the ATF expands when it gets hot. I live in Arizona so it doesn't get too cold. Only had the truck 3 weeks and whenever I first started driving it the transmission slips when I put it in reverse and when it down shifts the first time on the road it feels like it is slamming into the lower gear. We will see what they say tomorrow when I pick it up but they did give me a free rental car and I'm not paying for the check. That sucks over60 that they are not working with you. Sounds like a crappie dealership.

Thx GearCruncher for your check steps. 5K mi. on my 2016 and have had the delay into Drive since day 1 only when Trans is cold or cooled down. Bought Toyota ATF fluid and a bottle pump and followed your directions. Also used an infra red gun to check for proper Trans temp. It was only 150ml low. I'm curios though about the need to pin the cooler stat open. Do you think it actually drains itself? How could air replace the oil to let it drain out? Thx again for your help and for monitoring this thread.

    Hi Mike .
From what I gather and other members on TW have done , All you need to do is push the thermostat in once while the engine is running .
Doing this will fill the air cooler with oil and eliminate any possibility of an air lock . Your air cooler doesnt hold much fluid at all , maybe 1/4 quart .
The only reason you need to do this is because we believe the complete transmission cooling system was " NOT " filled at the factory .
If you have 5k in mileage , there is a darn good chance your transmission thermostat has opened within those miles
Regardless , you can push the thermostat in anytime and check the fluid at a later date .
I dont beleive the air cooler will drain on its own . Once the air cooler is filled , it will remain filled unless you are doing a complete transmission overhaul and need to flush out the complete transmission cooling system
Check your fluid level with the engine running and make sure you have good flow coming out of the overflow tube . You need some flow . If you see a dribble of fluid coming out , its not enough fluid , you want some flow
Some members are making a nasty mistake by not leaving the engine running when checking the fluid level

I'm upset that i am just now seeing this thread after 9,019 miles. Got on the phone with corporate immediately, created a case number and spoke to service department of the closest dealership i could find. I have been experiencing some of the symptoms listed on the thread. I have accumulated about 4,000 of those miles towing 4,000+ lbs from Virginia to Texas and Texas to California. Not sure if that matters at all. The Symptoms have been occurring since purchasing the vehicle at 142 miles on a cold November in Virginia. Not a very savvy vehicle mechanic so it all seemed normal since the vehicle is new. (only experience is googling issues for my 97 Dodge Neon)

Dealership will take a look at the vehicle using the techstream as "There is no other way to check the fluid"

I will keep you guys updated.

    Thanks a million gearcruncher!!!!

Man, I bought this truck because my cousin has a Tacoma with over 370,000 miles on it and it still drives and runs like it did with 50,000 miles on it. I have 211 miles on mine and I took to the dealer last Saturday to get the tech to drive it or at least give me a little piece of mind but the service writer in the front told me he would drive it to see if it would do it for him and it didn't of course. Mine is driving good and all but when I am at 70mph and get off the highway and stop at a stop light or sign it fells like my torque converter is stuck in lockup mode and then it releases with a light thud feeling when it drops into 1st. The service writer said that the truck goes through a " vigorous inspection at the factory and we do one here as well" So I asked him to check again and he said it will be done at my 5k mile service. When I said if you say its good then its good and I will hold you to it he was kinda speechless for a second and said well if it does it some more bring it back and we can check it out but your truck is too new and needs to be "broken in" first. Does he really mean broken. Oh yeah, and he also said you cant believe everything you read on the internet because I told him that I have read a lot of people are finding that their transmissions are coming from the factory with low fluid levels and dry u-joints.

Well, as I said in a previous post yesterday, I dropped off my truck to have the fluid checked and they had to keep it overnight. I just got a call to let me know they wanted to keep it another night so they could drive it again in the morning when it was cold to make sure it was all good. It was low on fluid but the service writer didn't know by how much. Hopefully it will be somewhere on the paperwork when I pick it up. They gave me this sweet ride so I wouldn't have to walk to work.....I cannot wait to get my truck back tomorrow.20160321_170055.jpg
