I don't really trust my local dealer, I bought mine 200 miles away rather than the local place. I'm wondering if a local reputable tranny shop would be a better option for me?

Not sure if this low fluid condition only relates to 4x4,s ????
The transmissions that were low in the 2nd gen trucks also included 2 wheel drive trucks
With this said , transmission coolers could have been added to the 2 wheel drive trucks .
I suppose the only way we are going to figure it out is if every member that finds his transmission low on fluid could post if he has the tow package with the transmission cooler . I dont expect all of you to post up your vin # but if you could let us know where your truck was built , it may help narrow things down .
I am sure Toyota already knows , but there is no way they would release this info to the public .

a month or two ago I had them check my ATF and they found that it was about .75 quarts low. I still noticed the lag or stutter every now and then. so I waited a bit and just yesterday I had them check it again while I was getting my oil changed. They found it was low about 1/2 quarts.... Hopefully the ATF is at good levels now...

Well I have a few of these shifting issues mentioned here, so I went out tonight as the temp was around 60 deg F outside today and checked the ATF level after figuring out the temp check mode. As stated here and on other threads it is very similar to the 2nd gen procedure if not easier.

My 2016 TRD DC OR 6sp was about 3/4-1 quart low. First I got it to the temp range for a proper level check and removed the 5mm overfill drain, nothing drained after it was removed, not even a drip. I figured OK I'll add a quart and a half as that is about what everyone is saying it is low by. I have done several drain and refill on my previous 2011 tacoma. It is a little tighter getting to the fill plug on the passenger side than my 2011 was. After refilling with about 1 1/2 quart, repeating the temp check mode jumper and shifter sequence I removed the overfill plug and about 1/2 quart drained, as soon as it is not a constant stream, plugged it, and done.

Have the shifting issues gone away?

I had my dealer check the levels before I picked up the truck and they said it was good, but my slips a tiny bit on cold mornings when shifting from R to D and then pressing the go pedal.

Hey, I have a question. I'm not sure how the transmissions are delivered to factories. Someone bring me up to speed. Do they come with transmission fluid already in them, or was the fluid added somewhere along the assembly line? And then I wonder if if the low fluid condition is found more on the ones built in San Antonio or the ones built in the Baja plant.

I'm not trying to stir up anything, but I got to thinking about working for a VW dealership about a hundred years ago, we had an oil feed the we used when doing oil changes. Drain the old oil, clean the screen, then bring the oil line, squeeze the trigger and the correct amount of oil went into the engine. It occurred to me that if they use something like that when filling the transmissions, if it were calibrated incorrectly, that might be the reason for some of the trucks being low on fluid.

    Just a thought.

If we go back a couple years where the 2nd gen,s were low , we didn't really figure out why they were low .
We simply blamed the dealers for not checking the fluid when they sold you the truck .
With this said , there is no reason why we couldn't refine the issue down to a certain factory or possibly the addition of the tow package as the problem .
I assumed Toyota would have addressed the problem on the 2016,s as there were so many transmissions found low with the 2nd gen
Turns out they didn't make any attempt to fix the low fluid issue .
Once again its up to Tacoma World to figure out the problem so Toyota can release a TSB .
If you guys pay attention to TW , Toyota Corporate uses us ( TW )as guinea pigs
They let the aftermarket hack out the problems , then release a TSB for the issue and they didnt have to pay a penny to figure out the problem .

I am going to guess that your dealer did not do a proper fluid check . A very common mistake made by most dealers is connecting the computer to the truck and relying on what the computer says rather than taking the time to go through the proper check fluid procedure .
My advice is to call them back and this time watch them follow the complete procedure . Read the first page in this thread for more info

Well I did not see any big difference in the drive/shifting characteristics of the 6sp auto in my truck today after going on a curvy 10 mile drive.

I went to the dealer to have them check the fluid at 5000 miles checkup, and they said that it would cost $120 to check to fluid level, since its a sealed transmission. I mentioned the as park of the service, it says to check all fluid levels, but they said that it still isn't covered under toyota care....anyone heard of this?

I would like to add that I haven't found any issues with my truck slipping, just wanted to check

All your answers are on the first page . For the benefit of the doubt , you have to go to the dealer and complain there is a problem . This way you are covered under warranty

My sales guy claimed that the service department was upset that I was making them check it, since it was a long(er) process. So I assumed they did follow the proper steps. Then again they may have taken a longer lunch break and never checked it at all, claiming they did. I suppose I could have my trusted local mechanic do it, but at this point in time it doesn't bother me a whole lot. Maybe for a peace of mind, though.
