i called and opened a case. i could have bought any brand truck. i plan to hand this thing down to my kids to drive in 10 years. i don't want 700 miles of low transmission fluid to cause problems 10 years from now.

So I finally checked mine with the help of my wife. It's not hard but certainly not as easy as a dipstick. I have only had one chance to bring it in and it was for the 5K. I got the famed, computer says it's fine. I picture Idiocracy ...computer didn't tell me to check the level... Anyway after reading all this and other threads I got scared and finally did it myself. It was just about a qt low. Hard to tell exactly because like a stooge I spilled the second some of the second qt when changing the pump from the first qt to the second. But, I used most of the first and just a little of the second before fluid started coming out. I then took the negative terminal off while I put a hitch on the truck. So yes I have a DCTRD without tow package. Although it has the whole mechanism that everyone is pinning to make sure fluid is in the cooler, but there is no cooler. Anyway, the instructions say it should be 20 minutes to put on the hitch it was more like an hour for me. Hooked it back up and it is... better? Different? I find it more responsive, I don't get the reverse to drive hesitation but it is also warmer now and I back into my garage now. It seems to be better shifting. Still not what I would consider normal for an automatic transmission in new truck. I still have the symptoms of, when I come to an incline and don't give it anymore gas it sort of shutters. Best I can describe it is in an old car if the carb was choking, it feels like that. I am trying to "drive it harder" which I have read on the forum after resetting the transmission. The mileage is pretty bad, I would say my average for 6,500 is 18 and I seriously drive like an old man. I almost find it does just as good or almost better if I drive it harder. So now, anytime I start to notice that stutter I step a little more into it.

That's exactly the way mine drives...I've even described it as a carburetor studdering on an old car to my dealer(s)...Almost drives better when you give it more gas but the mileage drops.

In a a few years when these 16s start showing up on the used market, how many will have worn transmissions from drivers that didn't know about this issue and drove tens of thousands of miles with low atf.

Judging by this stuttering you guys are explaining , is there a chance you guys feel that the cause of the studder is from the engine rather than the transmission ?

I have that studder from time to time and mine IS coming from the engine. I think they released this model too soon without enough R & D on them. The engine switches from port and direct injection and is not smooth doing it.

I have been keeping up with this topic for a while. I have a dcsb 2wd 6 with just over 100 miles bought at end of feb.
Garage queen for now, havent noticed any issues with cold shift but have been paying attn. seeing how my bumper is 3 inches from wall of back of garage.
Thank you gearcruncher and the rest of you cats for all of this info.

If you pay close attention you can feel another "shift" after the truck gets into the 4-5-6 gears. It's almost like a half gear shift. Hard to explain.

If you drive in say 5th, when it gears up to that 5th gear there is like another point where the engine shifts into like a 5.5 gear without going into 6th. Seems it does that in the top gears only.

Now I don't know much about transmissions but could that be the "torque converter"?

New member here... I placed a deposit on a TRD Off Road 4x4 Access Cab V6 auto being assembled in San Antonio to be delivered the last week of April or first week of May. Thinking about walking away--even without a refund--if they won't check and address the transmission fluid and other issues being discussed here. Thanks to everyone for bringing these issues forward...

Somehow. I don't trust them....they were doing the work while I was doing the paperwork on the car. The truck came with 1 mile, test drove it for about 2-3 miles. When I got it back after finishing the paperwork and the service, there were 7 miles on it. Took them about an hour to do the work I think. Time kinda flew by in the 4 hours I was at the dealership. Should I go get it checked somewhere else?

I bought my truck on April 8th and promtly put 600 miles on it. I checked the trans fluid level today (April 10th) and found it right at one quart low. The truck ran and operated flawlessly. And you better believe I was tuned in to it the whole drive, looking for functionality issues. None found.
