I took my 2017 in today to get the TSB. it was hanging up at 3500 RPM IN 4th at hwy speeds. A "master" tech let the trans cool, hooked up his compter and manually checked the trans. I know because I watched him. He added some trans fluid during the check. When I checked out the tech stated that it didn't need an update and that he didn't add any trans fluid. Like I said, I watched him add fluid. I informed management of his lying and also called Toyota corporate to add this to my case. As of now it is not sticking in 4th. If he reset the system would it take time for symptoms to return, or did he update and add fluid? Not saying he did so he wouldn' have to do more diagnostics do to low fluid level?

If the tech reset the ECU, it takes some time for the "AI" learning to do its thing. It will eventually go back to its bad habits. I too have the hang in 4th gear on the highway issue, and have just come to accept it. Most anything over 70mph, coupled with zero torque from this motor makes the downshift necessary in order to maintain speed. I think that aerodynamics play a big part above 70 mph on this Tacoma also.

Do it ur self for $40. ELM 327 WiFi on Amazon for $20 and OBD fusion app in the App Store $10 and Toyota PIds in app purchase 10$ and ur done. If u do have the dealer check it transmission make sure they do the over flow plug at proper temp not just the computer check. It takes about 4 hours to do it if u give them ur truck when it’s hot. U can only do that check when the transmission fluid is 93-113 degrees. There is only a 20 degree window to do it. Then cross ur fingers they don’t strip ur threads or cross thread.

My only concern with doing it myself, I have nearly 5k miles already on the truck. If it is low there has to be damage. Does me checking it void any warranty or give the dealer any reason to not fix any damage if it is indeed low?

No it will not and u will know for sure if they are not telling the truth. If u have touch up paint put some on the overflow bolt and u can also tell if the did the computer way only or if they did with them physically looking

I am doing this just for peace of mind. My dealer is 50 miles away and don't want to wait till the 5000 mile service. Currently there is 1550 miles on the truck. Occasionally, I hear a clunk when it downshifts coming to a stop. I have 2 quarts of oil coming from Amazon and intend on checking this myself. I've already practiced putting it into temperature detection mode. Currently, I have no idea if it is low and only want to do this once. My plan is to put a quart in before putting it into detection mode and then remove the overflow plug. I only have 6 1/2 minutes to do this and figured pre-loading a quart would give me more time. Thoughts?

    2 quarts transmission fluid
I had the same issue! Mine was reported to be 2 quarts low at 7,000 miles. They refused to consider it an issue, it is most certainly an issue. I called corporate and they didnt consider it an issue. They said if it was a problem then it would fail within the existing warranty and offered no warrenty extension. Ultimately, the transmission had to be replaced at ~15,000 miles because it was slipping bad and there was a lot of metal shavings in the fluid when I had them recheck it ~6 months later. Document everything, get your requests to the dealer in writing, try another dealer. They finally replaced mine no charge and provided me with a rental, but it was like pulling teeth. If you document 3 times where they cant fix the problem then you can start a file for lemon law and it will force them to address it or lemon law the truck. I hope it works out better for ya.

So just got my 2017 back from the dealer, decided to take it to a different dealer this time as the other one didn’t check the fluid the prior 2 times I took it in and asked. New dealership said the test drive my master tech was normal, I told them to check it anyways. When I picked it up service advisor said it was “within spec” but that in order to check that it was right they had to overfill the trans then let it drain to a certain point...leaves me wondering if it actually was low and they just didn’t tell me.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this - they didn’t make me pay a dime, despite saying level was within spec. Advisor said he spoke with his manager to have them pay for it because of my trouble. Don’t know if that’s true or if they didn’t charge cause it was truly low...we will never know.
