Don't know about all of that - the road condition piece in my experience seems to be lacking or at least awareness around the environmental variables. If I'm accelerating slowly, stopping at a light or in traffic, then repeating that over and over driving in rush hour - that is NOT my preferred driving style in any other situation. If I don't get out of the city for some long interstate/mountain drives on the weekend and spend a couple of weeks staying close to the metro area, it gets really stupid and thinks I never want to truly ACCELERATE...

But allegedly our trucks do cancel the learning in S-mode. Would be nice if you could do a learn from S-mode where you manually shift up at the point you prefer then throw it into D and it remembers your patterns from S.

I think you've really touched on an important factor here. If my truck thinks rush hour is how I WANT to drive, its missing the mark.

Buyers regret. Just traded a 2016 Tacoma Sport for a 2017 Off Road. I hope they get this fixed soon.

As a result, a high caliber of transmission operation is achieved. The AI-shift control includes a road condition support control and a driver’s intention support control. The AI-shift control is effected only with the shift lever in D, based on the accelerator pedal and brake operation data. The AI-shift control will be canceled when the driver selects the S mode.

Mine works exactly as described above, once it had learned of course. I don't hardly use S4 or ECT anymore, but I did up until the first 10k when one night I realized it was acting as though I had the ECT on, and when I went to turn it off, it came on lol!

But obviously some on here must have something off and they haven't nailed it yet. I wouldn't be surprised if one day they come with some component or the comm with it, as being the culprit. Hopefully they'll take a hard look at all those such as pedal position or some other b/s sensor as the easy fix.
I'd rather that than a gremlin or unicorn theory.

    Good luck!

I posted earlier in this thread regard the data collection, well, I just took my 17 OR in to dealer for its first service. I went thru all these problems and all the points being posted, and he said around 75% or new truck owners come in complaining about the shifting.
After we hashed this all out he had the tech reload the latest update back into controller and he would reset the learned shift data back to all zeros. 25 mile ride home along the Ky. River and lots of curves and hills. Transmission shifted the way that I expect it to shift. It was solid , no hunting or pulsing. Been driving it harder for last 3 days, so far so good, will see how it learns.

I would think you should drive it like you stole it. That would give the best shifting results maybe. I think people drive it too easy. From day one I have driven my manual transmission hard. Still shifts like the first day...

Perfect solution would be to convert to cable throttle.

Adaptive learning has been around since 1998 and is considered old technology now . If you have driven any Chrysler car or van since then , you were driving with a transmission that had adaptive learning in one form or another .
Back then , it was mostly about learning your driving habits to make the transmission shift the way you liked it rather than concentrating on fuel mileage . Vehicles didn't chug and go into overdrive too soon
With Toyota's programming , we suffer the drive ability effects from a manufacturer who only cares about fuel mileage and what looks good on paper rather than what the transmission feels like from the drivers seat

Dude. you are comparing the manual to the automatic...

With the AT it doesn't matter if you drive it like you stole it. It seems to forget itself the next time you drive. The AT is most frustrating in traffic. IMO, that's where you benefit from predictable throttle control and acceleration. It keeps trying to upshift which means I can't accelerate to fill a gap to prevent some Somali cab-driving asshat from trying to merge in front of me to drive 6 mph while talking on his phone.

Or where I need to accelerate to merge myself and get into the travel lanes without getting rear ended because a soccer mom decided she wants to merge at 10mph onto the interstate.

I end up having to fucking romp the gas pedal to get it to move it all and when it finally downshifts it drops like 3 gears, clunks to life, spools to 5000rpm and I close the gap and now have to get on my brakes because it dropped one gear too much and I'm flying. And it's rarely predictable. Sometimes it just gets some and drops into the perfect gear. Others it loses its mind and shuffles through all of them until it's like "this one will feel the harshest and be most useless..I choose THIS"

I was being facetious with that last comment lol.
I do understand the frustration though. My 4Runner did as you described sometimes. My wife's new Highlander does it but, with eight gears, it is not harsh as the ratios are close together. My friend's six cylinder Jeep does this.

Isn't there a way to "reset" what has been learned? Maybe pull a fuse for a few minutes or something?

I think some say as little as 30 min. But I've done it overnight. Just disconnect a cable when you park it for the night, reconnect the next morning. I'm not sure if there an actual set amount of time. But I do know a minute or two isn't enough. Maybe someone else can confirm a time.

I have been driving my new truck like a grandma... trying to do a proper break in period with very low revs and no redlining. Getting 19.9 mpg in hilly, curvy northwest GA. Mileage screen is always on when I drive... wife prefers the speedo readout.

Cruise control on the highway is "just fine" and I have not noticed any poorly timed downshift issues... but I will probably be more sensitive to it after reading this thread.

I have a steep dirt/rock/gravel driveway 3/4 mile long, so I shift to in 4 Hi D every time returning home, shifting to 1st manual when I hit the hill.

Truck may have to re-learn after 500 miles when I start driving a bit harder. I will sub the ECU tuning threads.

For my son's 2000 Ford Ranger, my mechanic/friend suggested disconnecting both battery cables and touching the cable ends together to totally clear the ECU. It worked. Not sure if that's recommended for newer vehicles...
