Having the valve body built up at a custom shop that builds valve bodies for you is similar to doing it yourself .
At a custom shop , you tell them what you want and they tailor the valve body to your needs ....$600 bucks
When you do the job yourself , you tailor the valve body to what you need . The kits are adjustable according to what you plan to do with the truck . Shift kits can be designed for continuous use of 4x4 low range and some are designed for street and strip . Having the valve body built at a shop is pretty much identical to installing the kit at home .

I believe you have the A340 series transmission in your truck

Excellent. That's what I was hoping.

Looks like there are 2 options for shift kits:
    https://transend.us/search/catalog/product/394467/details?search=T97169&pageNumber=1
    https://transend.us/products/394465...le&listType=1&pageNumber=1&priceDisplay=false

The trans was pulled from a junkyard, so I want to rebuild it, this is what I'm looking at:
    https://transend.us/search/catalog/product/314103/details?search=97006EF&pageNumber=1

Anything else you can recommend, or should I use a different kit?

The HD kit you pointed out is what I would go with .
There is more information on the HD kit here https://transgo.com/product-details/toyota-a340-reprogramming-kit/

The overhaul kit you pointed out will be fine . It would be nice if that kit came with some bushings though .
What are your plans for the torque converter ? High stall ? Low stall ? are you sending it to a transmission shop to have it flushed and then re-use it ?
Send me your e mail in a private message and I will hook you up with a couple manuals to make your life easier

May only suggestion is don't just jump to the hot rot setting immediately.

    Can I ask why?

This is not my DD, I do plan to play in this truck.

    Thanks

    Sent. Much appreciated!

I want your opinion on all of it.. this is going to be a play truck I want to eventually put long travel on and go play in the sand. I have no experience with trans builds.

Buy once cry once, might as well make it 100% the first time.

Just from personal experience. I had a turbo on my 2tr-fe and did hot rod setting for 1st to 2nd and truck for the rest. It shifted hard but was a little too much sometimes. The thing is you can always go to hot rod setting after since its just drilling a larger hole but you can't come back from it unless you change the plate out. I'm about to do a v8 swap in my truck and that uses an A340e as well and this time im going to be setting it to truck only.

Excellent point . The truck setting is what I would also choose
Transmissions that shift too aggressive cause shift shock inside the transmission as well as the vehicle . Internal transmission parts begin breaking / external vehicle parts begin breaking

    Makes sense

Does the kit come with both?

I'm doing a 1uzfe v8 swap from a sc400 and since Im using the transmission that came with it, I needed a slip yoke output shaft to keep the rest of my drive line. Here's a quick explanation to the differences between an a340f output shaft and 2 different style of a340e output shafts. If you're looking to do a 4wd swap this may also be useful.

I do also have the video of the disassembly and some of the reassembly but I haven't gotten around to editing that video yet.

Wow, amazing thread I stumbled on (though a lot of your links need updating). I have a ton of questions, but most prudently, @gearcruncher are the shift solenoids (S1 & S2) PWM or DC in the A340E?
You link to the Supra forums suggests they are PWM, but I have not found mention of that in any service manuals or descriptions of operation. The counter-information has been that pressure controlled by the throttle linkage, but I am not read enough on transmissions yet to know if they are referencing the same thing.

    Thank you

    Hey Trey
S1 and S2 are just on/off solenoids controlled by 12 volts direct current from the pcm . They are not pulse width modulated .
Yes , a lot of links are dead . I will fix it up next winter
Send me your e mail using a pm and I will send you the solenoid manual for verification

So there is a difference between input shaft and pump lengths depending on the engine.

The left is a 1uz v8 and the right is a 1jz vvti shaft (I rounded the short one lol)
    PXL_20201205_185346593.jpg

There is a small difference with part of the pump as well. It mainly has to do with the size of the torque converter (1jz vvti is smaller than 1uz). If you're swapping torque converter/ bell housings make note of the shaft lengths as they might be different.

If you're dumb like me and buy an a340e with the tiptronic, here is the pinout for the 12 pin solenoid plug

Thanks for posting the info on the valve body . I think you will be the first member at Tacoma World to install a tiptronic transmission .
I have to ask ....are you going to add a paddle shifter ? lol
A lexus steering wheel or even a steering wheel from a Supra would also be cool

There are plans to use an Arduino and a sequential shifter designed for racing simulators. The only issue is for now I don't plan to use the extra solenoids since you can get all the gears with out them. This trans is supposedly rated for around 500 hp so at least I got room to grow. The one thing for anyone reading this is you need a good sized cooler if you plan to run manualized in any a340.

Here is the sequential shifter next to my oem shifter, Just waiting to finish up some wiring/programming.

@gearcruncher I need some help diagnosing what sounds like a pump whine.

At first I thought it was the power steering pump and with high hopes, I took off the reservoir and cleaned the screen. While the screen and the fluid were dirty, it was not as bad as I've seen in some youtube vids. And unfortunately, the whine I hear is still there after doing this. I was pretty sure the whine is coming from the front of the engine, at least that is what it sounded like, but I have since removed both the PS belt and the AC belt and the whine remains even with those components eliminated.

Here are a couple of videos to try to capture the pump whine sounds.

This video is of a cold start and shows switching from neutral to drive, back to neutral and then reverse. The tach shows when it is in neutral. The whine is fairly faint when it is cold but when I warms up the whine becomes a little more pronounced:

Not quite up to full running temps, running through the gears:

Fully up to normal running temperatures:

What is interesting is, it doesn't whine at idle, or at least not in neutral where there is no load on the engine, but as soon as I put it in gear I can hear it. Also, the pitch of the whine changes with RPMs when I am driving. Load on the steering, turning for instance, does not change the pitch of the whine, but going down the road the pitch changes as the RPMs change with the gears.

I am wondering if the sound I am hearing could be coming from the trans? Can the fluid pumps in these transmissions fail like this? My truck is an '02 4x4 with the v6 and A340F trans. It has 225K miles on it.
