Transmission cable adjustment

    Last year I found the metal stop on the transmission cable on the throttle body to be inside of the boot, with the exposed part of the cable feeling very loose, and a mechanic had left the nuts loose, leading me to think the cable walked loose over time. I moved the cable stop to just barely poking out of the boot <1mm as per spec, pic A below. The cable feels a little slack in this position.

    I'm reading on the below and other threads that the cable can stretch over time (a steel cable stretches at this low tension?) and/or tightening it away from original spec position reduces wear on the transmission and it's therefore good to do.

    So I've adjusted the nuts to tighten the exposed part of the cable a bit, resulting in pic B. It's a little counterintuitive to me the way it tightens, but anyway the exposed cable to the linkage is now noticeably more snug. Did I adjust it in the direction that makes sense?

    The accelerator cable I have adjusted into a good position per pedal response and throttle plate position, so I'm leaving that alone.

    It wasn't good. It started accelerating by itself sometimes when cruising steady on a flat road. I readjusted the stop to inside the boot, flush with the boot opening, where it behaves right.

    I’m about to swap in a rebuilt transmission. The new transmission doesn’t have the “stopper” referenced in the FSM as being set 1mm from the outer cable end. When looking at my current transmission setup, the stopper is set at 1mm per FSM. This results in about 1-2mm slack before the cable resists when pulled. How much slack do you have with your setup now?

    Almost no slack, but not pulled fully tight. I can wiggle the wire a little.

    I think this balances with the accelerator cable, which I also have pretty tight for a responsive pedal, only loose enough that the throttle plate always closes all the way.
