You filled it until the fluid starting coming out of the fill plug or check plug? I wasn't paying attention once was pumping fluid in and it took something like 3-5 extra quarts to start coming out the fill plug, lol!

Looks like we scared @Lawncare85 off.

That's too bad...I hope he realizes that we, collectively, bust balls, A LOT. During this, we also manage to provide decent guidance. We got skills. Lol.

I learned early on you've got to have a somewhat thick skin here. Hence my profile pic. I got shit for liking Ford, and was given that pic. Ok, I'm gonna run with it.... My friends '71 Torino w/ 429 cobra jet is still the fastest car in town.

@Lawncare85 let us know what you found and if it's fixed. Inquiring minds want to know.

I spend a lot of time reading here. This place is a treasure trove of information. Not to mention the multitude of ways to separate you from your money. Lol

You do not need to jack the car up. An auto trans does not need to actually move to circulate fluid.

Once the engine runs the torque converter fills. Going from R to D and back repetitively circulates fluid through the valvebody and clutches/brakes. Jacking up is a waste of time.

Fill it till it comes out the overflow, cap the overflow then add another quart. Wait till the light comes on then drain the overflow. If nothing came out you are underfilled. Add and repeat.

It's conceptually very simple. In reality it's an absolute pain in the ass.

Nothing happens when you put it on the ground is drastically different then it works in R but not D. Nothing happening means it is so low that the converter isn't transferring power to the input shaft or gears aren't engaging because the valvebody doesn't have fluid pressure.

Hello - I hate to resurrect this thread - but I'm in desperate mode - my son has a 2007 Tacoma TRD-Sport automatic w/ approx 150,000 miles

My son is stationed in Norfolk, VA and his transmission lines "blew". He limped his truck to a repair facility - they told us they needed to fix the lines at a cost of $600 before they could "test" to make sure there were no other issues with the transmission - after installing the new lines, they told me the transmission is junk, said it only goes into reverse, and not any forward gears - they are giving an estimate of $3900 for a used, no warranty, replacement

I'm trying to handle this remotely, I'm in WI, as my son is attached to a SUB and doesn't really have access to a phone during working day hours - everything in me says we shouldn't need a new transmission, that it's either still low on fluid, as this thread suggests, or maybe a bad solenoid. I don't wanna piss the shop off and ask if they really filled the transmission with the correct amount of fluid - but I don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions or help would greatly be appreciated !!

Unfortunately I dont have any great advice for you.

That is the common cause of issues in these trucks with the 5 spd, low fluid. But you cant really verify that without being there in person. It also depends on how long he drove it with the leaking line. The pump continually pumps ATF through the cooler circuit. So if it was a bad leak it may be possible damage did occur if a lot of ATF was lost and continued to drive it that way.

You could try making a new thread about it under the 2nd gen section, that might get a bit more attention. Could also try the popular threads under the Virginia Regional section. There may be some folks local who are willing to lend a hand some way

If done tactfully, asking about the accuracy of the fluid check procedure is an OK question
