Recently purchased a 2018 TRD OR. Drove her off the lot with 15 miles. I’m at roughly 600 now.
I made a trip today to Kansas City (140 mile drive) and as I get to a parking spot to back in, Drive-Reverse
    CLUNK.
Then the same from Reverse to drive.

    I am bamboozled.

What should I check? Anyone have the same issue? I’ve heard of some owners buying new Tacoma’s recently with low RTF.

Will be running by the stealership later for some paperwork.

Read about that one too. I’ll have them look at it when I get there. Quality control going to crap???

I have a 2017 TRD OR. I have the same issue when switching between D, N, or R and releasing the brake/tapping the accelerator too quickly. If I pause just for a second or two between switching gears, this totally goes away. There seems to be a delay in the transmission somewhere, like it takes a second to engage the gear. The issue is amplified when the truck is cold.

Has the fluid level been confirmed full?

Has the most recent trans TSB flash been applied?

If not those could be good starting points

Thanks for the info. Everything has been checked and up to spec as I've been through 5 TSBs. Fluid is good, and U joints are greased. For me, it's just a timing issue. The clunking, which is subtle but there, completely goes away if I patiently change gears. I don't know how much, how often, or the severity of the OP's clunking, but this method worked for me. Maybe others are having similar issues...awaiting other responses.

When you say "fluid is good", I hope that it was checked "physically".... their computer check does NOT read the level properly.
For peace of mind, get it checked physically..... Happened to me......Missing 1 1/2 liters. Filling it made a great difference.

    Good luck.

I will inquire today if I make it to the dealership in time. Thanks! Should I just tell them what’s up and to have them apply the update?

Same issue here. But hey!? I wouldn't worry too much about it. I rather have that problem than a F up broken transmission under 50k miles on a truck.

Have you all checked the brake pads front? Kinda known problem pads shifting up/down as soon as you touch the brake and slamming in the calipers thus the clunk.
    Try this:
    find an empty lot
put from P to R and drive slow
wait for the truck to stop by itself (no brakes)
put from R to D and drive forward
    repeat a few times.
If no clunk, is not the tranny, is the brake pads.

At the stealership now. They have it in the bay. Applying update to the ECM, checking U joints and tranny fluid. Seems like the clunk only happens after driving for a while. Ie 2 hours at freeway speeds. So a nice and warm tranny. I’m thinking the PCM/ECM was adjusting to getting off the freeway?

They told me everything looks good and the ECM/PCM were updated. She drives and shifts better now for sure.

Seems I am in the same boat as you. Just wait an extra second and it’s fine. Dealership just said that’s how tacos are. Everything else checked out. Update on the PCM was an improvement. So far so good. The clunking happened more noticeably when the trans was hot and coming off of the freeway. I’m thinking the PCM was adjusting to the change in normal operating RPMs. These new systems are adaptive and are good and bad in my opinion.

My 2019 OR is making the noise as well and I'm hearing it coming from the rear end.

Drain and fill of the transmission will take care of it. Fixed lots of trucks with the same issue.

Did you ever figure out what this was . Same thing happens to my used 2015 I just bought. Also is rough shifting gears at high rpm. I just did a trans flush/fill/check slightly better shifting but the clunk is still there.
