After 3 years it seems to have smoothed out a bit. I also had my entire drivetrain serviced recently. All seems to be fine.

Maybe in the rear differential... ring, and pinion have developed some excessive clearance.

Who knows at this point lol. It's been a few years and she's holding up great. Had the service done and they didn't say anything. I think it may be the yoke the more I looked into it.

Pull the plug off the rear diff fill, check the oil level. Also could be a bad u-joint.

Just had the entire drive drain serviced. Engine oil, both different, transfer case and a trans flush at 40k. I've rode her hard and wanted to ensure she gets the love she deserves haha. I'm thinking it's the u joint or yoke making noise. It makes a clunk once in a while during a down shift.

It’s because of the clearances in the differential. Go grab the driveshaft and you’ll see how much play there is. When you go from R to D or D to R you are going from one side of the clearance to the other which creates the loud clunk.

This is my brand new 2023. If they were doing this in 2016 and still in 2023 I would say it’s just a quirk of the Tacoma and not an actual issue.
