I performed a Transmission drain and fill the other day and didn't like what I saw! Yes that is ATF, not engine oil. After sitting in the container a couple of days, the chunks settled to the bottom. Yup, those are chunks in the pic, not the normal sludge you typically see on a trans service. Trans shifts and drives fine but by the condition and color of the ATF leaves me with mixed feelings where to go from here. The fluid doesn't smell burnt, nor does it have any metal flakes in it, but the gritty chunks have me very concerned. Should I save for a new trans and drive as is, or drop the pan and do another drain & fill and change the filter? I'm afraid if I change out all the fluid, the trans might start to slip. Thoughts, or has anybody been in my shoes? Anybody replace their transmission?

Let this be a lesson for the rest of you. SERVICE YOUR TRANSMISSION PEEPS!!! 184K. Just recently purchased it. First service I would guess. Dam...

If it is driving fine now, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Those chunks have probably been in the pan for years. Maybe drive it for 6 months or so and do another drain and fill and see what it looks like then.

You could drop the pan and clean it out. There's no filter, only a screen. It takes 12 qrts or so to flush the system.

You could send a sample to Blackstone for an analysis.

184k miles and it drives fine? You already changed the Trans fluid, just drive, and drive ,and don't think about it. A lot of times we overthink things , but hey, it drives fine and shifts fine, then you're good to go, not much else you can do.

Flush it enough that you get nice pink fluid after driving it a while, then monitor it.
Not sure why you think it would start to slip after a good flush. That's silly.
