    Yes, my first post was if anyone knew a good shop, good means the they do it right. I'm installing a transmission cooler and want new fluid, at 80k miles its a s good a time as any. I'm prone to migraines and for some weird reason the smell of atf sets it off, so I'm not gonna diy it.

    Great question Doug. What would a flush do that a proper drain and refill can’t? I don’t recall hearing a drain and refill gone wrong unless you didn’t get the level correct. Much less risk and much less costly.

    As long as they remove the transmission pan , chances of issues after the fluid change are minimal .
    Its up to you to tell the shop to remove the pan . Easy to feel their process out over the phone .
    Pan gasket , new filter , fluid and shop time to do the job properly .
    If pan was clean , drain the converter . This can be gravity bled rather than flushing
    Anywhere but the dealer .

    As far as trasmission fluid , Semi synthetic WS if you are just doing a pan drop and leaving the rest in the converter .
    Not a great idea to mix as the coefficient of friction is different between fluids . Its proven that different friction modifiers fight each other

    If changing all the fluid in the cooling system , the converter and dropping the pan, Lubeguard fully synthetic transmission fluid far exceeds the quality of WS.
    This is draining your complete system by gravity bleed , not a flush

    Thanks for clearing that up. I was wrong about the pump. I should have gone to you first ;)

    Still not super hard to do yourself. They just want specific shops. Not advice on how to or apparently not the DIY method that does the same thing.

    Like I said on the first page... making phone calls would have achieved better results than posting here. Google: Transmission shops in my area. Spend and hour on the phone, done.

    Its a ploy used by lube shops to get you in the door .
    " We backflush transmissions to get all the old oil out "
    Makes you think they have some state of the art flushing machine that can change fluid direction .
    Thats impossible .
    Try calling a lube shop and ask about back flushing . Listen to what they have to say, try not to laugh . Dont go there
    Those guys keep me busy . They take too many risks and expect me to give them deals when they screw up :spending:

    Lube shops are another place to avoid like the plague. At lest they don't pretend to be good at there jobs like the dealership guys.

    I have made many phone calls to Lube shops , dealerships , transmission shops and general automotive repair shops pretending to be a customer interested in having my transmission serviced .
    What pan gasket do they use ? what filter do they use ? what type of fluid do they use ? What if I have an issue after the transmission service ?
    Do they connect a scanner and road test before they service ?
    Maybe the customer thinks new fluid will fix a problem and try to blame the shop for a shifting problem after the service . This happens a lot
    Do they road test with a scanner after they service for proper function ?
    You would be surpised by how many are misinformed or take risks by flushing without removing the pan regardless of your mileage or the last time a service was performed
    .

    I fired my shop manager a few years ago for having a transmission pulled out and rebuilt , only to find out the Catalytic converter was plugged solid .

    That is so refreshing to hear you say that. Back when my 5.4L crapped out on me, I knew the "how to's" of it thanks to FordTechMakuLoco on YT. But finding a shop to do ANY of it properly, use updated parts (like metal check balls and new valve body parts that FORD TSB's updated) was like pulling teeth. I ended up doing it myself. The transmission went fine, then the engine crapped out. Timing as usual on the Triton 2v/3v's. That channel alone saved me THOUSANDS of dollars - because they did things like you mentioned. So when I took it to the shop for the stuff I didn't have - like real time scans - that was all I needed them to do and I made sure they knew it. I got the data, reported to the F150 forums and got everything I needed myself. Did pretty damn good, until the pistons started slapping 30k later (cold starts were like nails on a chalk board)... at that point I just gave in and got a reman. Sold the truck another 30k later. Shops love those 04-08 F150's...

    As a mechanic that works in a fleet environment, I can say that if you want to shorten the life of your transmission, then get a flush. If you want to extend the life of your transmission then service it as recommended by Toyota. A flush is only done if there has been a parts failure and it is to flush the cooler and lines. We had fancy flush machines, after transmissions started failing way before thier time the company realized the planned flushes they were getting us to do was the problem. Flushing a serviceable transmission is snakeoil...
