My son's girl was driving across Utah when 4 of 5 gears stopped doing anything. It's a 99 Taco with 240K - just can't count on Tacomas!

Truck has only 4th gear. I replaced trannies but never been into one.

I've tried different shifters as I thought maybe shift bushing was shot. It seems to go into the gears, but just doesn't move, except in 4th.

Clutch disc must be there, as it tries to move in 4th.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Got 3 Taco and one hilux, so I better learn- what is common to 4 gears but not 4th gear?

    Thanks

You say it "tries to move in 4th". If none of the others do anything I suspect your clutch is shot.

How many miles on the current clutch? If all 240k of those are on the stock clutch then I'm betting it just needs a new one...that's more than what a lot of people get out of one clutch.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Has a truck with 240,000 miles on it...
Says just can't count on Tacoma's...

    WTF?

You know there is something called routine maintenance? 240,000 damn miles is a long way passed that service interval... skippy.

I think 240 K is pretty darn good, though I see ones with 400K. Some here evidently don't recognize sarcasm The clutch has been replaced once, maybe twice, as the young man normally driving it was not easy on it.

Wondering why it would move (then stall) in 4th gear if clutch is gone. No noise in any gear. It has had rigorous maintenance its whole life. 240K isn't bad living and 4 wheeling in the Rockies.

    Sincerely.

I will be thrilled if I get that much out of my clutch lol. But as you said, 4wheeling isn't easy on them...especially these stock clutches. Feels like stepping on mashed potatoes

Sounds like a bearing seized up somewhere inside it. 4th gear is one to one ratio with the engine to the tires so it may be whatever bearing seized up doesn't affect 4th gear. My guess is you're going to have to crack open that transmission.

Not worried about the transmission as much as the boys lady. As long she made it thru Utah it's a win.

    Utah is sketchy.

Let us know what you find when you start wrenching.

Based on what you said that I highlighted above, I'd guess that it's a clutch issue.

Lady and her girlfriend are fine. Drove this unit to Oregon. It quit on way back in Provo. She had AAA so they towed it to Rock Springs Wy.(200 mile limit). They spent 16 hours in the Walmart parking lot. I took my 2011 up there and towed it home.

Still fighting the top two bolts. remember lots of extensions and a few universals on them. Also wondering if the replacement tranny is correct. It has an iron block hanging on the t-case. Old one doesn't.

    Appreciate all opinions and suggestions!

Pretty sure OP was kidding. Especially given the number of Tacos he has.

Yea, that was a joke. Referring to the Chevy's, Fords and Jeeps around here that don't go 240K. But I sure don't want to accidentally tick someone else off........

You're fine man on the ticking people off. He misread ya, no biggie. Any who I've never pulled the tranny but have read many folks saying many feet of socket extensions with some wobble head and some not

    OME and worth every penny.
yes, 4th is straight through. Input to output, no other rail involved.

What's common? You sure it's not shifter?

Wish I just had 3 Tacos, and not them plus 3 Sammys, and a few 39 Ford Trucks (some are just for parts).

Good thing I live in the country!
