I think I now know what was/is wrong, though not why. Supposed to be balls all around a bearing? And teeth in this void?IMG_0243.jpg IMG_0245.jpg

Ouch. Yes the bearing should have balls all the way around and teeth on the gear.

Looks like the bearing on the shaft siezed and so did the shaft, and then that stripped all the teeth of the same shaft?

Who knows? Just noticed the input shaft turned way too easy (in every gear but 4th), and there was a lot of scrap metal everywhere......bearing was not seized when I pulled stuff apart but may have been early in the game.

Bearing is definitely bad. Not an expert, but it looks like a tone ring to the right of the second pic so there is a small chance there aren't supposed to be gear teeth there, wipe the grease away and it should be obvious if they were sheared off.

Edit: Sorry, just finished reading the whole thread and it would make sense that they sheared off and hence you can only use 4th. Good luck to ya OP, curious how this turns out.

Thanks for reply Tacos and all. You can feel the "roots" of the teeth in the grease, and ain't much grease there - more like fretted metal looking like grease. Seems you can also see a tiny bit of the teeth on each end of the "blank". Didn't actually find the missing balls, but lots of bearing cage material! Surprised it wasn't screaming, but maybe radio on high. On to installing my spare tranny I guess.

Seeing where your at with this and what happened inside has definitely speed up my tranny swap time line. Thanks for the pictures. Also for reference I called a local shop yesterday they quoted me $1,000 to rebuild a w59 already off the truck.

Tour991 - missed your question. Main input shaft I'd call it......

@Tour991 dude so that is what we were thinking or were told or how it was explained to us. Either way I don't know enough to say what it is I guess, but would be kinda funny if that ends up being main input shaft after all:rofl:

Yep, input shaft. I think you win the award for the most damaged 5 speed.

That is in fact the input shaft. Cool. Well it's always good to get to the bottom of it.

It's great OP posted those pics, that's how I kinda originally envisioned what could be going on from what I had seen with my experiences in past.
Seeing what work you've done, I'll bet you get yours opened up and if bearing hasn't actually failed yet I'll bet you'll be good just pressing a new one on. I guess you'll see soon enough when you get her opened up. Keep us posted on what you find
And @Malpais82e thanks for going the extra mile and following up with pics and posts for us man. Much appreciated

Just an update. Son and lady drove 99 to Longmont Co yesterday. old spare tranny laying around works great. Nice new clutch, throw out, pilot bearing - hoping it makes it to 300K 'cause I'm old and done doing this!

Wondering....is there any reason to save gears, shifting mechanisms, cases from this trashed tranny? I don't plan on ever rebuilding one, and used ones are still available. if the young man can't make it from 240k to 300k - tough shit
