    My 2010 automatic transmission does the same thing. Only happens when I'm coasting downhill around 30-45 mph. Never had any problems with it though, it actually seems to help keep the truck stay at a consistent speed.

    Does the Tacoma auto trans really lock you into a specific gear or does it just limit you to the gears below the spot you've selected??

    (I honestly don't know- I do know that some Ford,Kia, and Honda select the specific gear but most just limit the trans to a subset of the gearing)

    But if you choose 2-It does not (I don't think) start in 2nd gear...It starts in 1st, shifts to 2nd, then returns to 1st if you slow down. Selecting 3/4 instead of D will allow you to get up into 3rd gear but not to O/D (for towing)
    If I select 4th with my shifter it's on me to start the truck moving smoothly or stall.

    No , it doesn't start or stay in the gear selected .

    The gear selected is the highest it will shift up to .

    So between what you and OZ have said-You CAN'T select a gear...You can select a subset of options and give your self a bit more control over the trans- but not nearly as much as a manual.

    My wives Toyota Matrix does this. Asked the dealer about it as well and it is called something like assisted braking.

    They said it is totally normal on her car.

    I don't think I'll ever drive an auto. I even saw auto's are now getting better gas mileage when I went to buy this truck - don't care. It's not a truck if it's an auto. Sorry... no clutch = no truck.

    Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
    Sounds normal to me. My '11 taco does this too, however when it does downshift, it doesn't go as high as 4000 rpm, I think around 2500-3000 rpm.

    As far as 'coasting', one cannot 'coast' in an auto unless you put it in neutral. What most consider 'coasting' in an auto is simply taking your foot of the gas, and letting the engine 'engine break'. To me, engine breaking is a good thing, especially on morning commutes with heavy stop and go traffic.
