My 2017 TRD Sport is going in for a service 2 tomorrow. I hit 202,000 km/125,000 miles. I added both differential fluid change and Tranny fluid change , serpentine belt to the usual service 2 list. Last time i had this work done was 145,000km/90,000 miles. That was the first tranny fluid change i had done to the truck.

My Taco is pretty much a pavement princess and its almost 99% highway miles with the occasional off road on mining sites and construction sites I'm teaching at. I don't tow with it and never carry more then 500lbs in the bed if I'm packing rescue training gear for a few weeks on the road of courses.

Just debating if i should ask them to drop the pan and change the filter this time instead of just a drain and fill. Just wondering if at this mileage and my usage a this would maybe be a not so good idea since its never been done before and dislodging some debris into the system potentially i've heard can happen.

If it was mine I would do a drain and fill with the same every 30K miles moving forward.

Sounds good. Thats what i was thinking as well but wanted to make sure there wasn't some long term benefit from a full flush at this mileage point i was missing

Do these trucks even have transmission filters? If so then yes change it.

Would advise drain & fill over flush. At that mileage and usage description I wouldn't be scared to put fresh fluid in

I did the pan drop, filter and gasket change. You get about a quart more of fluid out when you drop the pan and take the filter out. Easy job.

I have heard some Tundra and Tacoma owners say that once the truck has passed 90,000 or more miles it is best to not flush and mess around the transmission filter. The recommendation is to exchange the transmission fluid, which is what I had done by the dealership's shop for my 2013 Tundra. There are some "YouTubers" telling the some things. Now, after the replacement of the transmission fluid in my Tundra, the transmission shifting through the gears seems to be working perfectly or smoother than before. But the dealership recommended to flush and replace the power steering fluid, so I had another shop flushing and replacing it. This truck shows 91,000 miles in the odometer.

For you to decide (video first, article second):

I was just thinking how this guy Scotty says his son's Sienna has no transmission filter and thought it might be the same in the Tacoma for some reason. Don't know what I was thinking there

I've heard that if you never change or don't know if the filter or fluid has been changed, when you put in a new clean filter, the restricted old filter was flowing at a reduced rate. When the new one goes in you have full flow again, and it can knock dirt loose to clog up other parts of the trans.

redacted - I provided incorrect info thinking our filter was a fine wire mesh. Brain fart.

It’s not a wire mesh screen. I changed mine and took it apart. It’s a very coarse material that is like a pad encased in plastic. Now, I would say that unless you had a catastrophic failure I doubt it would ever clog or have restrictions.
