Trans has been 100% perfect since I bought it with 3 miles on it. Never had a single issue ever.

When i first got my truck it was doggie with now power and the transmission constantly hunted for the first 1200 miles or so. I wonder what i got myself into buying this tacoma. By 1500 miles it was near perfect with plenty of engine power. It always shifted buttery smooth and still does. So far its been outstanding.

Totally possible 30K was the break-in period. Theres a lot of literature out there from Toyota that says they design gearboxes to have interference fits at first so that as they operate things wear down to fit exactly right and operate more smoothly with time. Entirely possible that's what you are feeling. It also may be possible that your dealer finally did the right TSB after the several trips you mentioned to update the TCU to the most recent version, which by all accounts of other members is vastly improved over the original TCU settings

    Adaptive learning .

The computer in your truck learns the way you drive and tailors the shifting to the way you think it should feel

You can pop the battery cables off and do a short term memory wipe .
Then re connect and put your foot down in an attempt to make it shift a little more agressive
I suggest cleaning the throttle body at the same time

I have 25k on the ODO at this point. Mine shifts pretty well. I think it’s a combination of the following -

    - Transmission “learns” how you drive and responds appropriately.

    - Transmission "trains" the driver how to operate the vehicle and you subconsciously learn what works with the shifting.

Another poster made a good point about ensuring tight fit-up of mechanical components by allowing them to “wear in”. If anyone here has ever owned a primo 1911 (Wilson, Les Baer, Dan Wesson) then you know what I’m talking about.

With that said, I don’t think this would make a big enough difference in something as complicated as an automatic transmission.

I believe you, but it’s best to keep any positive opinions of the 3rd gen Tacoma or unfavorable opinions of the 4Runner to yourself.

It really makes some cough members agitated.

Oh, no its real. The transmission in my 2020 is buttery smooth and precise in its shifts according to the power band of the engine.
