Keep in mind that it's a rare dealer that has a 'Toyota tech' trained in full on transmission repair.

Once they get past some fluid checking and computer diagnostics, if an internal repair is pointed to, they just R&R the whole box.

The days of breaking down, replacing soft packs and the occasional hard part are pretty much done.

If you want to repair your existing trans, an independent shop is pretty much your only choice.

The principles of the internals are very much as they've always been. It's the electronic wizardry that has most of us confounded.

I'll let @gearcruncher speak to his own credentials, as I do not know him personally. However, I do seem to recall him mentioning he's rebuilt a few hundred units. So if I have that right, he might have some experience based knowledge.

My .02. If it's overfilled to the point the valve body is submerged, you'll have shifting problems for sure. Is 1/2 qt that amount. IDK.

My friends Tacoma's transmission still has not flared, when shifting to fourth gear, with the transmission overfilled 1/2 quart. But it does flare when the transmission fluid level is correct. There must be a valve body problem on these trucks.
