Just a quick question regarding the dealership doing the transmission TSB /flash. We have had some serious wind a couple of times over the last few weeks and I did my first real hwy drives. This caused a few of the trans issues others have complained of. In the one case it was such a serious headwind I am not sure if it would have pulled 6th anyway. In the other the wind didn’t seem so bad that it should have upshifted while in cruise and it didn’t. I am in the TSB vin range so I called to set up an appointment.

How long does it actually take to perform the flash and get the truck back to me? I am unsure if the issue is the dealer is backed up or if it takes longer than I am anticipating. Should I be leaving the truck for hours to have this done?

I ask this because we live 30-45 minutes from the dealer and their shuttle service is within city limits only which I can appreciate. Their offer is to take me anywhere within the city while the work is being done. I can only kill so much time and don’t want to waste a day for something that takes a short period of time. The issue has reared it head exactly twice in 5000km. It isn’t that big of a deal. But I want to know when I hook up my trailers in the spring that the issue has been addressed so it doesn’t be a serious issue when I actually need it to work properly.

Is there anything else that is being done while the TSB is being addressed? I don’t want to be unreasonable but I am not sure if the issue is with the girls doing the bookings and I am getting a generic response or if it actually takes hours like they are insinuating.

    Thanks in advance.

Once it hits the bay its less than an hour to do the reflash. If they check the tranny fluid manually like they should before the reflash then that's an added 3-4 hours to let the tranny fluid cool down before they can check it. It has to be done by a senior tech and I am sure that guy is the busiest guy in the shop. Dealer ships don't run like Dr. Appointments. I drop my truck off the night before and pick it up at the end of the following day. I had a 7:00 am appointment and they were done with the 10,000 mile service and the transmission R1 update around 11.30 am when they called me it was ready. They started with a cold truck that was delivered the night before. This is at the largest Toyota dealer in California. I am lucky its only a 2 mile walk for me to get home. A computer reflash is serious business you don't want them to be rushing it and make mistakes and then a 3 day delay while they order you a new computer for your truck.

The reflash is so worth the hassle. Wont make the pig pretty but at least it will be a happier pig.

I assumed 30—60 minutes-ish. Nothing was said about fluid check ( doesn’t mean they weren’t going to do it.)

It all got convoluted once I was transferred to the girl booking appointments. I asked if they had a Friday appointment (today) and got absolutely no answer. I was told they had no waiting appointments but asked where they could shuttle me. It took three times asking what a waiting appointment was to get an answer. Apparently oil changes and the like are waiting appointments where you wait in the comfy chairs for your service to be done. They don’t want a dealership full of people waiting for hours and that is why they have only so many waiting appointments. Anyway the wheels feel off the bus trying to deal with this woman and I had her call back down to the service guy to verify how long it would take and then I was told hours.

I live 30-45 minutes away so sitting in a dealership for hours or being shuttled to anywhere only to wander aimlessly for hours is no different for me. It takes up my day and I don’t want to ask for a loaner unless necessary. It seems like the girls in booking are completely disconnected from those doing the service and communication isn’t happening. The GM of the dealership and I are on a first name basis and I don’t want to be a thorn in his side by bringing him unnecessary issues. The process affects almost a full day of mine and I want to manage my time as best as I can. As a millwright working 12 hr shifts and 2 weeks of that on nights I am tied up and can’t make appointments as easily as some. Because of this I don’t want my days off to be without a vehicle and stuck in the city for hours. So schedualling requires a bit of work at both ends to make this fluid and avoid making this a complete PITA.

We were in the city today so I stopped and talked to the service guy in person and he laughed when I told him the issue with the girls doing the booking. We are set up for Tuesday 1pm and he said 1 hr. He pulled up the TSB and wrote on the work order word for word the description in the TSB so there was no BS or confusion about what they need to look at or what they need to do.

Agree with this reply. Finally got my 2016 Limited in for the 5K service. Dropped it off at 8 AM. They gave me shuttle ride home. Called me at 1:30 saying it was ready. Shuttle ride back , job done. Yes, I can tell the difference in the tranny shifting & especially the downshifts. No hunting or thuds. The transmission funds were good. Will it for a week and see how it goes. All I can say it, do the reflash.

I've had 2 done so far.....Usually 20-30 minutes tops once they get it back to the bay...A lot of times they'll let you go back and watch them do it.

I went in for my TSB flash today. Spent some time talking the the GM of the dealership and in our conversation he looked up any recalls, campaigns etc. Nothing showed up. However the service advisor said once they hooked my truck up to their equipment it clearly showed a flash /TSB was available.

I wonder if this is where many customers and their dealerships are getting into issues. Depending on who you ask or how they go about looking for information they may get extremely varying answers. I completely trust the dealership GM and also the service advisor. So when people I respect can't find info and I know they are giving it 100% it makes me wonder if this is the same issue at other dealerships. It also makes me wonder if customers are launching straight into full on attack mode when they don't get the answer they are looking for. I can be guilty of this at times so maybe we need to be a bit more patient before we start burning bridges with our local dealership.

What is the vin range that needed the flash?

Attached is the full PDF of the TSB as of today.

EDIT: If that isn't kosher, someone let me know and I'll remove it. Just spreading the love from my 5ish hours left with TIS (for which 48 hours cost me 15 dollars!).
