Transmission Fluid Change Dilemma

    Alright, so this pains me to post this bc I generally pride myself on keeping up with maintenance but excuses, etc.

    Anyway, I have a 13 Taco with 127k miles. No issues other than the valve cover leak.

    I had the transmission flushed and refilled with royal purple at around 50k.

    Now, after driving 78k miles and the “oh shit, I should have done this 27k ago” moment, I’m debating on the best course of action.

    My thought is drain and fill with either (1) royal purple to keep it consistent or (2) go back to Toyota fluid.

    only concern with going back to Toyota atf is mixing fluids.

    any advice is appreciate or insights on if I should consider some other COA bc of the extended time with the current fluid. No issues at all with shifting.

    Will you be doing the work, or will a shop? If you are Id drop the pan, clean the magnets, put in a new strainer & gasket, and refill.

    I dont think the fluid matters too much. As long as the fluids are both WS compatible. If you are worried do a few drain and fills back to back over the course of a few weeks.

    I would NOT do a flush. Drain and fill- so you should stay with whatever fluid you’ve got in there. Don’t over think it.

    Do whatever helps you sleep better at night. At the end of the day it doesn't matter. I've driven several million miles in over 50 years of driving and have never changed the AT fluid in any vehicle. Currently just under 700,000 combined miles sitting on the driveway with the factory fluid in them. The Tacoma has the most miles at 251,000, but only one is under 100,000.

    Unless you are towing on the regular (like majority of miles), 78k is not a lot of miles between services.

    The manual says change it every 60k if you're towing a lot (or otherwise heating the fluid).

    I'd say do whichever makes you feel better.
