I am having a problem understanding this theory ?
I am not saying you are incorrect , but I have a hard time believing the thermostat doesn't need to be pinned when many members are going to the dealer and having the thermostat pinned when checking the fluid .
With the information you were given , did it stipulate that fluid flow goes through the thermostat in 2 directions all the time ?

Not a theory. I bought the TIS 2 day pass and the manual doesn't mention the thermostat at all in the ATF level check procedure.

That's not to say they didn't miss something. They may have updated it since I used it (about 2 months ago). Our maintenance manuals get revisions constantly at work. We have to trust those manuals. There is no emergency lane at 39,000 feet. That's why I put faith in the manual.

There is a pdf that list the new features of the AC60E and AC60F that you can view when you sign up to TIS. It says the trucks with the tow package flow through warmer, radiator cooler, air cooler, thermostat, then back to trans, ALWAYS. Those without are regulated by the thermostat.

    Verbatim.

"The ATF flowing route does not change and ATF always circulates from the transmission to the radiator
(water-cooled type ATF cooler) and air-cooled type ATF cooler."

It does seem counterproductive to install a thermostat when it's not even being used. Stranger things have happened though.

thanks for the explanation . i am outta town for a couple days .
When i get back i am going to do some investigating .
    Again i appreciate the info

There are at minimum 20 posts for low fluid conditions . I try catching most of them but its time consuming .
I am trying my best to keep the Poll thread as relevant and as updated as possible . Its updated daily . All you have to do is click on the link and read the first page . I continue to edit as new information becomes available
Your best bet for new information will be at this link

There are several threads which discuss how to check the transmission fluid. I don't recall if any posted the actual procedures from the Toyota service manual. So, here they are for both transmissions (2- and 4-wheel drive). It's not that difficult to do either with Techstream or not. Both procedures are outlined in the official Toyota docs.

[edit] apparently there was a problem attaching pdf files. Bad file names. Trying again.

Forgive my ignorance, since I may have missed this elsewhere, but how do I know which tranny (and the corresponding guide) is the correct one? I'm assuming each comes with certain model of Taco?

You don't need an adapter but do need a pump. I used something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Plews-55001-Lubrimatic-Standard-Bottles/dp/B000BQW5LK but found it at a local auto parts store.

If a pump is needed im assuming the refil plug is in a tight spot to get to also.
    Anybody done this procedure yet?
Im going to try today and cant remember how tight it was for the fill hole last time i was under there.
Also. It states to install new gasket and o-ring. Is this really necessary?

Im asking you guys in order to save the embarrassment of the dealership when they have no idea what im talking about if I were to ask them.

In the form AC60F it says to use an SST or a Techstream to check the Temp before you check the level. Any tips on checking without either of those?

Starts at page 5. (Without techstream). I jumped odb pins 4 & 13 with a copper bobby pin. Fallowed the instructions and worked like a charm
