Hello fellas, new to tacoword. I am a first gen owner of a 2003 4dr prerunner, I've had my truck since 2005 and have never been happier with a vehicle. Last month my son purchased a 2017 SR5 double cab. Rides phenominal.

I did notice the trans surge when rolling from a stop in the morning, so I decided to check the trans fluid level. I found the thread on how to go about it including bringing up to correct temp and all that. I printed out the 10 page pdf that I found here on the procedure. I have only one question, according to one of the users, he said that if you have the tow package you must push in a thermister (?) valve (on the other side of the trans fill and drain plugs) in order to get a correct reading of the levels. I cannot find it...

Would anyone here happen to have a pict, a diagram, or anything, even a suggestion as to how I can pinpoint this bloody piece?

Thanks guys, any help is truly appreciated. I have a strong feeling that this truck will also be low on tranny fluid.

A surge is more likely associated with IAC valve, or some other issue rather than transmission.

That said, if you feel that you must check it because some here on TW say so, here’s a tip:

Got to the TOYOTA dealer and purchase a 1qt of TOYOTA WS ATF fluid for your Taco, gather all you need as per instructions and pour 1/2-3/4qt before you begin and before it warms up because you’re going to find that adding atf is very difficult to do even when cold let alone with the engine running or warmed up in the fill plug location.

Once you’ve added the ATF fluid, just let it run out until you see the dripping as per manual.

The ATF fluid is expensive to buy, but you’ll loose a small amount in checking it anyway and you don’t want to try and catch it in a jar and put it back in.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers
