So I was working on my Tacoma doing my oil change and had a complete brain fart when i actually ended up draining my transmission fluid and adding another 6 quarts of oil to the engine. Now I have my transmission pan drained and motor with 11-12 quarts of oil and drove around 7 miles before realizing what i had done. Up until the point of when i drained the motor oil and filled back up with 6.2 quarts I also did the same for my trans and looked at videos telling me 3-4 qurts to buy and pump in from the bottom. I think i didnt do my temp check correctly and still have around 3 quarts of trans fluid in my car from toyota. My check engine light hasnt popped up but after a few days when i got on the freeway my car would shake as i braked on the freeway if i was doing 65+mph and the rpm kept revving struggling to make the gear switch until i hopped back on to the street back to 45+mph and lower it stopped and started switching the gears again. im not sure if i should try to temp check it again and see if more trickles out or go to a mechanic shop im having the worst month of my life some help would be appreciated

I would start by watching this video and decide how you want to proceed.

I think you should have this truck towed to a competent mechanic. No offense brother, but you've done enough damage. Let a pro take over.

Oil pans do not have a check plug on them. The transmission pan does.
i often say it’s much better to learn from someone else’s mistake.

    We all make mistakes.
It happens. The bad part is you made 2 mistakes.
    And again, no hate.

The second mistake was not having the correct amount of fluid in the transmission and driving it.
Most of the time, you can get by if you catch it QUICK. Within the first mile or end of the road.
But it sounds like you went a good ways at higher speed.

My advice would be to take it to a shop.
Unless you can be really confident you get it into temp check mode have it filled completely.
Your transmission can't handle much more stress. It might be too late now.
Letting a tech look at it, fill it and drive it would be you best bet.

    Not necessarily.
I'm not all that familiar with the transmission on the 3 Gens.
But clutch pack damage is damage. That's what takes the beating first.
I don't think there is a line pressure or turbine speed code on these trucks either?
But again, not delt with any to know.

A good tech will know pretty quick once it's filled and test driven.

Did you address the engine oil and drain out ALL the oil and put in 6 new quarts?

did you refill the transmission with Toyota WS trans fluid and check the level per official method?

If you haven’t done both of those, do not drive the truck by more. you’ll hurt both the engine and transmission.

Don’t sweat it you are not the first one to do it. IIRC for the several that has had this happen after they got the trans properly filled everything was fine.

The good thing out of it you are admitting your mistake and seeking help. Good luck!

This is what keeps me from learning how to do my own maintenance. I’m a diy person and I study up before doing anything but the thought of something like this happening scares me off. I’m in the medical field and we are so ridiculously controlled by so many organizations scrounging for their share that there is far less chance of something like this happening in the OR. Sure stuff still happens, but if this type of maintenance was regulated in similar fashion there would be a color coded brightly labeled drain plug in at least 5 languages with a specific key that requires 5 steps to obtain and about 10 pages of horribly coded software to get through lol. Sure seems like the plugs could be at least labeled somehow…

Don't let someone's else's lack of attention to detail keep you from doing your own work. It sounds like you already live in an "attention to detail" world, so you will be fine. And it's kind of like that old carpenter saying, "measure twice, cut once".

Actually, not a bad idea. However, the manufactures would not agree on a color code. There would be decades of "Standards" adoption and committee meeting after committee meeting.

It is really easy to tell the difference between plugs, once you are familiar with your vehicle. On this site when I do not know what is being discussed I go look at my vehicle just so I can become intimate with my vehicle.

When someone is intimidated by a process it is easy to make mistakes. Training, training, training is all so important - ask the military.

    OP, just run with it.

But on tacoma, the engine oil pan and tranny oil pan are in different zip codes.

Years ago when spark plugs were readily in sight and oil plug was readily in sight I'd do light maintenance
on my 1992 Toyota Pickup Truck. It was a fun thing to do twice a year changing it all out. Plugs, Wires, Rotor, Dist Cap....,

    But no more.

The systems are overly complicated but still perform the same tasks and the reach is beyond me.

I concur with towing into a shop, fess up what you did, let them take it from there and assess if any damage was done.
