I got about 4 quarts when I did my drain and fill. I replaced with Valvoline maxlife dex/merc and would be interested to know what others have used.

I'm rather confused. Don't toyotas need Type IV? Why does my dipstick say Dexron II:confused:
I guess I need a crash course on transmissions and fluid
Also, I've got the A340E. Should the fliter be the same as the A340F?

You usually get around 4-5 quarts out. I seem to get a consistent 4.5 quarts out of mine. You're ok using anything that's compatible with the Dextron III spec. Also, from what I've read, synthetic is compatible with conventional. If you don't want to do a full flush, maybe do one drain and refill and then do another one at your next engine oil change.

Drain and fill only gets about 1/3 of the fluid out. I buy 13 quarts, warm up the truck, remove the return line behind the radiator and route a clear hose from it into a large oil drain pan, stick a long funnel in the dipstick hole and start the truck. Keep adding quarts into the funnel which is close to the same flow going in as is coming out. After between 9 and 11 quarts you can see the color brighten and clarity change. At 11 to 12 quarts, I shut off the truck, reconnect the return line and start it again. It is usually right on or within 1/2 quart of being at the correct level. I've used this method on all of my auto vehicles.

Just do a drain and fill annually. About 4.5 qts. Pretty sure it's the same gasket as plug for oil change but not positive as I use the MightVac out the dipstick tube for tranny. I use Castrol DEX-VI, $ 35 cheap insurance for a year. If you can get an extra qt and do the power steering line as it is the same stuff.

Someone must have swapped out the dipstick with another! J/K :bananadance:

Just follow along with whatever the stick says. My tranny also takes Dex II.

Is 12 qts enough to do a flush and fill with pan drop and filter change?
Also, in case I need a few extra qts, is Valvoline Multi-Vehicle Maxlife compatible with Toyota Type T-IV?

The capacity of the system is around 12 quarts. I'd have some extra on hand if you see the fluid still looks dirty while doing the flush. When you drop the pan and replace the filter, you'll get around 6 quarts out. After you get everything back together, and refill it, you'd then run at least another 6 quarts through the system.

I don't know what system you're using for the flush but I have a video for it. I also have a video for the filter change. As for the fluid compatibility, I don't know. Your rig needs a fluid that is compatible with Dextron III because that's what the vehicle trans spec was when it was built. So, as long as both fluids are equivalent or supersede Dextron III, they should work. You'll have to read the bottles. For me, I'd use all the same fluid. If you need more Toyota ATF, just go out and buy some more.

The fluid specs for he A340F tranny says 10.7 qts dry fill. The dipstick says Type T-IV NOT DEX III. Your thoughts?

P.S. I've seen several of your videos including the ones you've mentioned. Great productions and very informative. I swapped out both CV axles using your video.

Well, it was my understanding your 1st Gen Tacoma had the same drivetrain as my 3rd Gen 4runner. My auto trans calls for Dextron III. I have the A340F trans as well. Interesting. I'm guessing Toyota Type T-IV is equivalent to Dextron III.

12 Quarts will most likely be sufficient to see clean fluid coming out when you're done. But, it never hurts to have extra on hand. It's not like it's going to go to waste.

Good to hear you're getting use out of our videos. Happy Wrenching!

my paltry 2 cents... Whatever the dipstick says - use it, regardless of the manual or online specs. If it calls for Toyota's Type IV, bite the bullet and just pay for Toyota's Type IV blend.

I flushed mine at 127k and still no problems, don't worry about it as long as you have someone doing it that knows what they're doing.

Type IV is the newer spec, they switched in the early 2000's I do believe. Also when they started dumping that pink long life coolant in the radiator as well.

That's bogus, I'd never listen to a claim like that! I peeled that stupid sticker off my dipstick so nobody would try to talk me out of a transmission service. Toyota just wants you to spend more money on a new car or in the parts department is what they're saying! No oil lasts forever, it all breaks down with time and mileage eventually no matter how nicely it's treated. For me it's cheap insurance to change it every 50k, $200 isn't much when stacked up next to a $5000 transmission replacement! Also don't neglect the differentials, people forget those guys too.

Potentially dumb question.....do the dealerships have to do the tranny drain, flush, refill? Is it worth the up charging as opposed to your local trusted mechanic?

At 125k on my manual and got slight shuddering going from 1 to 2. Thinking it’s time
