Owners manual refers to it as S mode, used to prevent unnecessary upshifting if desired.

I use it to limit access to 5th and / or 6th if I feel like the truck cant decide which gear depending on speed, slope or headwind.

It also says use D when best fuel economy is desired, I use that too.

It doesnt say use one mode only for everything.

No bad feelings, just a taste of your own medicine. Funny you still think you put doubt in my head. So no, your work isn’t done.

Still trying to figure out how ~3500 rpm in 4th @ 75 mph is saving gas vs. ~1800 rpm @ 75. i would think everyone knows by now that higher rpm burns more gas.
Locking out 6th on highways to decrease shifting makes 0 sense. logically you would want 6th as much as possible.

yeah, and i am referring to something very specific. highway speed. flat road. 70-75 mph. in D for fuel savings.

So you purposely try and instill doubt and fear in others for no reason? You sound like a real stand up person.

At 75 in 5th you're doing 2100rpms and it's not trying to toggle to 6th while in S5, it still maintains momentum and because it's not ramping engine speed but staying constant, gas mileage stays up too.

Cruise control was never meant to conserve fuel, only maintain speed regardless of gear.

I'm not instilling anything, you're doing it to yourself.

Yea, I’ve read that section of the manual several times. I’ve also used it when trailering my ATV’s.

I really think Toyota should have stayed with a five speed. Sixth gear is almost useless. Or, they should have gone with an eight speed or something. I guess they felt that would have been crazy on an offroad truck.

The six speed auto definitely isn’t their finest work.

It seems to me he either put something in your head or under your skin.

This looks like a bad case of thread stalking, which doesn’t accomplish anything other than showing everyone on the forum that you’re obsessed with him.

Here are the gear ratios for the 3rd gen.
    upload_2015-8-17_19-47-54.jpg

Technically any gear ratio less than 1 would be considered an overdrive gear so 5th for the 5 speed and 5th and 6th for the 6 speed MT and AT.

MT owners can select 5th or 6th and leave it there but because the ratio between is so close theres no major mechanical advantage, only lower rpms to help with fuel savings; when comparing the AT gear ratio it's even less and the truck chooses what it feels is the best. S mode gives the AT owner the ability to prevent shifting back and forth to the higher gear if speed / engine load change due to throttle input or if cruise control engaged, terrain, slope or a sudden headwind. In other words if you dont agree with the truck's choice in that circumstance (D) you can make the choice for yourself (S4, 5 or 6).

TSB will change transmission mapping to try and hold gears longer but it doesnt change the gear ratio, they're still very close together so the AT in D can still toggle at certain speeds or conditions.

My 1st gen has an OD off button to prevent access to the single OD gear in that truck. S mode allows me to prevent it from accessing one or both in my 3rd gen.

Like I said, when you understand what it has, learn to configure the transmission in the different modes the truck performance begins to shine.

Looks like the 4 Cylinder Manual got the best Reverse Gear Ratio of the bunch!

Found this below, now it makes sense. I guess my Butt Dyno needs calibrating. I essentially downshifted into 4th gear and then bumped it up twice into 6th and all was good as it stopped the back and forth between gears, I was using Cruise Control. It did downshift again on it's own while in S, I gassed it and it went back up. We're talking an 8 mile, 6% grade. It sounds like a better option would have been to use the ECT in D. I look forward to trying that next time. That video posted above is pretty funny, at this point, I'm going to say yes, you need to learn to drive them, lol.

"S stands for Sequential. Unlike most other cars selecting gears in S mode doesn't actually mean you're selecting that gear (unless you set it to 1). It just limits it to that gear, but it will eventually change gears depending on speed etc. Really doesn't change the throttle mapping or shift points like it would in a typical sport mode in other cars. That's why Toyota can't call it Sport mode."

”my work here is done”... work being trying to instill doubt in people. I’m not instilling anything in myself. Just laughing at your mediocre attempts

Maybe some boxing gloves for you two, and have it out in my front yard would be more fun. Certainly more entertaining.

Exactly. So you’re admitting that you are purposely Fn with me and started it? Once you can admit that, I’m done.

You need to work on your short term memory, it wasn't ignored, I told you to go ahead and report me if your feelings needed to be soothed.

As far as meeting half way to settle the "beef", I'm currently on travel in Spain so meeting halfway would be a little wet. That's why my posts seem to come at odd hours, it's 8pm here. Travel is part of the boring life I lead.

Move on Jewels.... you have plenty of your own threads that need tending to.

Did settling the beef entail sharing actual beef?

Or have we crossed the dreaded forum tough guy line?

This is the reason we have an ignore button people. Press it and the evil internet Svengali masquerading as Jsinnard cannot push your buttons/keep you up at night/cause you to double your OCD meds/head fuck you/make you question the meaning of life/ etc.

Push the button and all will be well.....
