I think you need to learn how to properly 'Quote' here on TW....... Your post and quote has my name, but that is not at all what I wrote.

Where did you get that quote from?... they're not my words.

Grinding, probably the rear end, less likely transfer case, not transmission.

Unfortunately once you run transmission with low fluid to the point you can feel it, its done deal.
Not a question "If its going to fail?" but "When its going to fail?"
Lucky for you it failed within warranty. Others will probably get a failure after warranty expires.
I would not buy used 2016 Tacoma, because transmission is a time bomb.
Lucky for you yours blew up with in warranty, so you will get it fixed.

I will take a guess at a broken planetary inside the transmission . This would cause the output speed sensor to trip a code forcing the transmission into limp mode .
A new production transmission has weak points that Toyota doesn't compensate for during testing . Toyota is more concerned with fuel economy over durability/ reliability these days
Chances are , the OP will never know the true cause or the justification of driving with low fluid
Dealerships dont disassemble transmissions . They just replace .

I'm pretty sure it's low transmission fluid because I got a "overheated transmission warning" before it went into limp mode. I dropped it off at the dealer. Going back tomorrow to get my rental (better be free) and find out what's up. I'm not even mad. I'm glad I had problems while it was under warranty.

You and I (or maybe someone else & I) have debated this issue before I believe. I understand and I don't necessarily disagree with the logic...the rub for me is buying and paying a premium for new and then being provided a reman unit. IMO, if he's given a reman unit, the only fair resolution from TM is to provide some other type of compensation in addition to the repair itself.

I agree with you . At least it happened under warranty .
There were many folks who were not so lucky with their 2nd gen trucks who suffered from low fluid issues and didnt know it until warranty had expired

If your trans temp light illuminated , your transmission had to hit 305 degrees . Your fluid is definitely cooked

I guess it's a relative thing. But, did you compare the number of tranny complaints to that total of 20 on the Tacoma? Did you find how many complaints were placed on other 2016 Toyota models?

Here's what I base my feelings on...

A.) The portions of transmission complaints is a large percentage of those 20.

B.) There are ZERO (0) total complaints for 2016 Toyota 4Runners, 5 total for 2016 Highlanders and 8 total for 2016 Tundras. Those three models, in total, far outsell the Tacoma and have few complaints.

And so, as I stated in my post you quoted, "if it means anything"...it does to me if I'm in the market and it constitutes a boat load (if only to me).

I'm not thinking its the planetary gear assembly. When that goes, you definitely get a "bang", but you also don't go anywhere. You gently coast to a stop.

You are correct. We most likely will never know what the real problem was.

You need to take into account how many Tundra's and Highlanders that are sold compared to the Tacoma. I don't know the actual number, but I know there are way more Tacoma's being sold compared to the others.

    Tacoma ~ 17k
    Highlander ~ 15k
    Tundra ~ 11k
    4Runner ~ 10K

I didn't look into it that far..I just searched for all 2016 Tacoma complaints and saw 20 total. I was expecting to see a lot more than that.

We could diagnose all night and still never know .
    What we do know
He was driving at highway speed as the transmission was upshifting and the temp light illuminated , most likely 5th gear . He heard grinding , then the transmission downshifted ( went into limp mode ) .
The only six speed I can think of that is comparible at this time with a you tube video is the 6 speed AS69RC Aisn Seiki in the dodge . Have a look at the overdrive reaction gear. The splines look incredibly weak .If the splines fail , the first thing you usually hear is a grind .
    Like I say , its a guess :)

What ever happened to all the gear heads from the early days who could tear down a tranny or work on somebodies rear end? (ok, just for this thread, in and out of the shop) it was a special breed then and now, you got my attention.

I can relate this to the real computer technicians of the 70's early 80's compared to all thereafter....

Gotta respect those in the know...
