so i had the same "issue" as the OP. Like everyone else has said, it's how hill start assist works. I tried it when i first got it and if you are on a steep hill and put in drive, then let go of the brake, it will roll back a foot or so but then will stop you. Try it in your driveway. Totally normal for tacos. My other vehicle that had hill start assist would actually hold you without a roll back as soon as you left off the brake giving you time to hit the gas and start moving. I highly recommend testing in your driveway. It may sound like all hell is breaking loose but that's how they are......you will then understand and feel way way way more better. i did/do.

So does the Sport and I would assume the SR MTs also. Hill Assist is nothing like CSC though.

Hm. I seem to remember reading that it was supposed to be a direct replacement.....don't remember where though so maybe I imagined it.

as a follow up, here is how i park my cars with automatic transmissions:

    1) come to a stop.
    2) put trans in neutral.
    3) pull parking brake
    4) release foot brake to make sure parking brake holds vehicle
if ( it does hold the vehicle)
    proceed to 5
else go back to 3 and repeat and pull parking brake harder then got to 4
    5) push foot brake
    6) put trans in park
    7) release foot brake and shut off the truck..

i NEVER have the bad clunks when shifting out of park to drive or reverse when doing the above..

No problem! HA is sort of an everyday thing where CSC is, like you said, for a sticky situation or for a clutchless start in the driveway. I've had a car and a bike that came from the factory with live starters (start in gear or neutral without touching the clutch). It was pretty sweet, and I converted my other bike to be like that.

I wish the Taco was that way, but the CSC button is an okay compromise.

Except for Step 5, that is how I tried to get my wife and daughter to do it in their ATs, but they are sporadic about it. At least they use the parking brake all the time, but I hate it when I feel it clunk out of park. :frusty:

Picked it up and they said " Vehicle operating as designed" "Car will roll back until parking lot pawl in transmission stops on a gear." "To stop this apply parking brake to avoid roll back".

    No charge, under warrantee.

If I would have come here first I could have saved myself a couple hours back and forth to the dealer.

    THANK YOU ALL!

so regarding this. i have a 2019 trd offroad 4x4. So I also have the crawl control. From what i read way back last year when i was wondering about this hill start assist, if your truck has crawl control and the automatic, your hill start assist behaves like you experienced and i experienced. it will let you roll back until to catches for a couple seconds. it does work, but it rolls back first before catching. I tried that in my steep driveway and sure as shit, it rolls back, and catches for about 3 seconds. If you dont not have crawl control then your hill start assist should work as expected. that is from what i read on here.

Good info. So it sounds like HA is also different for the OR and Pro ATs compared to the other ATs.

Man, there is no end to the strange things that they did to confuse the 3rd Gen owners. Three different implementations of Hill Assist. I love it!

there was a response to this thread further up with just a link to another thread. I read that just now and i had posted on that last year when i had just come across this feature. I think the answer is that all of the trims have the hill start assist besides the manual OR models. that is listed/mentioned in toyota literature. the other trims have one of 2 versions. 1) one version clamps down on the brakes as soon as you release the brake yourself and holds for 2 seconds. 2) the other version lets you roll back while it beeps and clicks for a bout 1 foot then it clamps down for about 2 seconds.

The trd or a/t and the trd pro a/t (if that exists- i forget) both have mts and crawlcontrol and have the behavior #2. there probably was some conflict between legit HSA like #1 above and the mts/crawl control stuff...

Yeah. That is three versions in my mind: none, no roll back, and some roll back. Gotta keep the gang on their toes.

The Pro comes in both AT and MT.
