Lift soon to be supercharged

Hey everybody I have a 2001 Tacoma double cab with an automatic transmission. Recently it started to not engage in drive but does when I put it in low gear manually its fine also I can go about 20 feet and put it back in drive and all is good what's the deal. I'm thinking it a sticking solenoid any ideas.

used to have - 99 2.4L I4 5 lug & 04 prerunner v6

I never fooled with mine but im told there is a linkage or something to tell it to shift, maybe yours is binding and needs to be lubed
