When truck is cold and coming to a stop the transmission downshifts hard ("clunks-slips-roughly shifts" from 2nd to 1st gear. It's hard to explain and it goes away after it's warmed up. Anyone else experience this? 2016 Limited model.

I've only had 1 weird shift.. Kinda like what your saying.. Otherwise the trans is shifting nicely cold and warm.

If you search there are threads on this....general consensus is that it may be a bit low on tranny fluid. It's a sealed system and some suspect the dealership isn't doing a proper check of the fluids during the initial receiving inspection or prior to selling the vehicle.

I have 5500 miles on my TRD OR 4X4 AUTO with no problems, and I checked tonight after your post to see if I could hear any sound. I also shifted modes to 4x4 high and 4x4 low just in case. I don't hear a clunk, but I can definitely tell it goes into gear when I shift it manually into sport mode.

You didn't mention mileage on yours, but maybe mine has been broken in already because of my mileage.

I've had a couple of those shifts, really jerky/clunky from 1st to 2nd, and from 2nd to 1st. I'm going to drive a bit with ECT engaged and see if it happens again.

I have 2200 miles now. Have not had the clunky down shift for a while now.

I get what you are saying. When mine is cold and I come to a hard stop it's not smooth and a small clunk can be felt. I'm at 2100 miles now and other than when it's cold the auto shifts as it should.

As long as I do smooth stops when it's cold (first 10 minutes or so) I don't have the rough downshift into 1st.

Why are you making hard stops when the engine is cold? Warm it up first.

I doubt any dealer is checking the tranny fluid before they sell it. It's a lot of work

Because life happens on the road. I try to avoid hard braking but it does happen. Red lights on the expressways (red light fines are $1k in CA after all the admin fees added up), trying to get a dog to the vet, spilled beer in lap while trying to grab the fifth of jack in the back seat and thinking the green light was red.

BTW, that's how rumors start ;)

That discovery was proven to be true for the 2 gens. It's not known yet of the 3rd gens are light on fluid.

Toyota transmissions have always been known to be finicky when cold. Their shift points are all over the place. When FULLY hot, they stabilize.
If you think there's a problem, go back to the dealer & get the "service advisor" to ride along after it's cooled. It's under warranty!

Merry Christmas, GearCruncher (canadain bumber) :p
