I am about to trade my 07 Prerunner in on a new '17 Limited. I have read here that there may be automatic transmission issues on the 16's. Is this still an issue? Any help would be appreciated.

I'd say do a good long test drive. It is hard to diagnose other people's expectations. You're correct, it is a hot button issue, but most love it.

You probably should have searched this. You going to get a lot of TW member bitching how crappy the tranny programming is regardless of the year.

I test drove the '16 and found the transmission to be shifty. Some of the problem is the engines lack of bottom end torque and it's constantly down shifting to keep the revs up for more power but then shifts up to lower the rpm to improve fuel efficiency. It's constantly switching from what the driver wants and to what it's programmed to do. It drove me bonkers. A lot of people seem to be liking it so it's probably just my resistance to change.

@cwdog I have a 17 limited and have never had any transmission problems. The only issue is when using cruise control it will downshift and won't upshift until you turn cc off. Not a big deal. This seems to be a cc issue not a tranny issue.

Test drive up big highway hills. ECT & S mode help. Be prepared to throw on a set of Bilsteins. The factory shocks had too much body roll for me, coming from a TRD sport

Etc button. Try it on and off. The new Tacos start off in Economy mode ( my word, not theirs) and the throttle response can feel dull. Switch to ECT and you’ll realize a lot of that feel in base mode is programming to squeeze MPGs. If you’re a steady as she goes type, you might not notice. If you like to push, you likely will.

My 2016 just GOES when I punch it but if I drive it normal it does shift a lot but also gets great gas mileage because of it. Its a tradeoff drive ECT always on for power but worse gas mileage.

I thought I did research it, but all I remember reading about is people complaining about the 2016 and was hoping Toyota made some programing mods to the tranny. I have driven one for about 30 miles in city and interstate and never noticed a shifting "problem".

I did test drive and I feel strongly that you and everyone you know should be held responsible for any dissatisfaction at anytime for anything that may or may not occur be it with the truck or any aspect of my life! :)
    Thanks for the reply!

Yep. Go visit the dealer. They can fix it with the new flash.

OP- love my 17. I will kick it to S mode and leave it in 4th if doing a lot of around town stop and go to keep it out of overdrive. Otherwise, I just drive it and it works great.

Only problem I had on my 17 limited was the third brake light leaking water in the cabin...

    Good luck

Do you need to know, or care?
No Limited MT, so just test drive it and see if you can live with it, it’s really not that bad.
