Funny how there is always someone who jumps in with a stick to comment how superior their transmission is and then this thread pops up: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-manual-trans-characteristics.528380/

So which is it? Manuals are bulletproof and the savior to all slushbox woes or they have their own issues? That’s right some have have issues and some don’t just like the auto transmissions.

Maybe the manual guys can get together and have their own circle jerk instead of shitting on every thread that auto transmission guys are creating. I test drove both and personally the stick drove like a 5 ton truck not a mid sized Japanese truck. Yet I don’t jump into the manual transmission threads to crap all over their thread or tell them that my auto has been fine with only one TSB update. You guys have had your fun and made enough posts about the mistakes everyone made by not buying a stick. You have your own issues so move on.

Manual tranny trucks come with 2 sticks. One to shift with, the other...goes somewhere else.

They probably started filling the transmissions with the right amount of fluid for the 2018s. Mine was low and now that it has been corrected many of the issues I had went away (so far) and behaves like I would expect it to

I think people have more issues than both transmissions do...

2017 here. Have had the truck new for a couple of weeks and the transmission has been giving me grief for about that entire time. Up-shifts are sluggish, lugging and downshifts when coming to a stop are harsh. Throttle response sucks. Had the ECU flashed and it helped some but not entirely.

Am getting my fluid checked soon (out of pocket unless it is low) and we'll see what happens there but these are my 2 cents.

Haha, you got some good reading to do. Just google "eating Tide pods". It will make you think less of humanity. Somehow.

Screw that out of pocket crap. Explain to them the issues and that you are concerned the fluid level is low. IF they refuse, call corporate and you will have it checked within a week

I love how the third gen section is just the same 3-4 posts over and over again...

For the record my parents are looking at 4Runners/Tacomas and the 2018 we test drove felt just as bad as my 2016 which I assume had low transmission fluid, but the dealer said they checked it in about 30 minutes and sent me on my way.

Check this out: I called my dealership back to arrange the time, saying that I will even cover the cost of the check if the systems are okay but the girl said drain and fill is the only option and I have to pay no matter what because they "can't check a closed system" lol what a joke.

So I call up another dealership, explain my issue and they right away acknowledge my problem, explain the whole process to me, that it can take 4-6 hours (must check fluid when cold then warm, etc) and told me either way it's under warranty and I won't have to pay. Made a time to drop off the truck first thing tomorrow morning.

Don't know if they stepped up to steal a customer from a rival or if this other dealership is just straight up better than mine but here goes.

Not possible to check in 30 minutes especially when warmed up from driving.

Sarcasm, doesn't translate to the internet very well tried to put in the  to help with that. I'm aware they cant possibly check it in that time, they insisted I didn't know what I was talking about and everything was fine. Worst service department ever...

Right after my post a user suggested to read his tag and "get out of the gene pool". Other than that, it doesn't belong. Started out just trying to add a data point to the thread

Yeah...no. After waking up at 5am in minus 28 degree C to drop this truck off this other dealership called me and told me they drove it around and all is fine. No sluggish shift, no jerking, no weird downshifts. Oh and no need to check fluid. I was close to fuming. I didn't arrange all this and drive out of my way for these guys to burn some of my gas and tell me I'm an idiot.

Called two other dealerships and spoke to managers there that similarly refused to promise to check the fluid. Am I in bizzaro land? Called Toyota to create a case but those guys are as helpful as a bag of road salt in July.

I'm 30k on the line, 2 weeks after having been given the keys and I have to shell another $200 for a drain and fill? Are there lawyers for this?

While it's certainly a sad thing, I think parents teaching their children right from wrong, how their bodies actually function and react to chemicals, along with how to diffuse/ignore peer pressure would go a long way to eliminating such weirdness. Along with some basic love, attention and discipline wayyyy before they get to the out of the house stage.

Of course there's now a couple of generations of parents that have a percentage of members that neither got that themselves, nor have a clue how or why such things make a difference in a child's life. They are just a quackers as the kids.

And now pods are being pulled from the shelves. Which of course is a stupid corporate reaction. I've got to go buy up, as I use them when traveling for easy laundry care. You know, like they are made for.

    /rant.

Now returning you to your daily investigation of various 3rd gen transmission issues. :anonymous:

Only thing I have ever needed was a battery which was replaced for free.
Maybe - a few were underfilled initially and now this will be a paranoria for 15 years.
