I have noticed alot of play in the drivetrain, It does seem very clunky at first. Its definitely not an easy mt to drive compared to say a car with mt. But it gets easier to handle once you learn where and how it behaves at any given speed/gear.

I wouldn't recommend it be a vehicle to learn to drive mt in. I have a CDL and have yrs and yrs experience in handling manual rigs. But my taco is just as difficult to drive as a tractor trailer when it comes to shifting.
Just my experience with it. A good truck, but it has an attitude that needs tamed every time you use it.

I went into my '18 3rd gen knowing that it was going to perform differently that my old 2nd gen. So the increased frequency of shifting was expected...and would I have no issue with that...if it was consistent.

Sometimes mine will drop directly to 5th with a slight increase in pressure on the gas pedal. Other times it drops to 5th and then immediately drops again into 4th. Other times I have to put significant pressure on the pedal and the truck will buck a few times before it downshifts. Once the revs come up, it's fine again. I notice this behavior mostly in 4th, but 5th and 6th do it too. The bucking seems to get worse as the truck heats up. Purchased new and now has 2600 miles over it. Started doing this (or at least that's when I noticed it) about 3 weeks ago. My daughter asked my why it "pulses" so much when she drove it.

Only other issue is it seems to make a really abrupt transition from R to D when I back out of my driveway first thing in the morning.

No CELs though and I haven't made an appt. to take it in yet.

I own a 2018 trd sport and I do have shifting problems, surging as the dealership calls them.
When it sits for while and I start up and go there is major bump on the drive train soon as I come to full stop,it does this few stops.during the normal operation temperature tends to down shift real hard you can feel the front dive.
I’ve already taken it to get it flashed and it did work for a month or so but the problems are back.

No issues with my 2018, what people complaint here about the shifting is nonsense imho. The truck was designed the way it handles. I even get 22mpg and this is my daily driver. I love my Taco!!

The thing when you take it to the dealer they already know what are you talking about, some people are skeptical because it’s a Tayota Tacoma they run forever.

I had a TSB for my transmission done on my '18 Sport a little while ago. It did feel better, but I noticed that on the highway the gear searching was quite noticeable to where it became annoying. They did a transmission reset on it yesterday and it feels much better. I'm very happy with it now.

They’ve did tsb to my truck and improved but mpg drop noticeable, but the bump on the drive train came back.
The bump I’m talking about feels like you are towing and your trailer is pushing you and I can hear it even with the windows up.

My 2018 has the occasional hard clunk from 2-1. I also have an issue where even on a flat road at 60 it will hang in fourth. I will eventually try to get the TSB done.

2018 Tacoma with 69K miles. Just started slipping out of 3rd gear into limp mode. Dealership says I need a new transmission.
