It's all BS.. There is nothing wrong with the transmission. The problem IS people don't know how to drive and they NEED something to complain about to feel relevant!

Is it possible to have Toyota dealers provide lessons on how to drive AT tacoma, thus preventing tranny issue threads from popping up here ?

BTW, this is totally just my opinion as well. I don't have any AT issues, but I never use CC, and I don't live in a hilly area.

Seems that way to me too. I wonder some times if there is any way to sort out those that don't like the way the truck drives when nothing is wrong and it's operating as designed, and those that have real issues (bad part; something's wrong). It is designed to downshift as it goes up slopes. If it bothers you, you can always prevent that behavior by using S-mode. I see nothing wrong with the way it operates when it operates as designed in D. I do wish it would upshift a bit faster once it crests the hill, slope, whatever. Rev 1 helped a bit with that but it still needs some work.

I just found this thread and it was like music to my ears. I ordered my 17 TRD Sport 4x4 DCSB and waited 8 long weeks to get it, and while I do love this site and learned a lot from the truck before I took ownership of it, I must admit some of the stuff I read about the transmission made me think twice about purchasing this truck and almost cancelled my order. I do think some people had transmission problems or were used to their previous generation Tacoma, but for me, this being my first truck and first Toyota, I am not sure if I am missing something or what?!?! I love driving it and I use CC a lot, and yes it downshifts on hills and all that, but every car I owned does that....so maybe mine being a 17 had that transmission issue worked at the factory. Either way, glad I am not the only one thinking I got lucky or just plainly missing something obvious because I have very little truck experience. I am very happy I did not change my mind, this truck has been awesome...then again I just have 600 miles on it...haha....I hope I did not just JINX myself....:fingerscrossed:

I think the "gear hunting" issues are because we now have 2 Overdrives.... OF course it will "change gears"... that's what an automatic tranny IS supposed to do..!!! (ie: Automatic)...

The tranny is NOT "hunting".... it's placing your truck in the appropriate gear for the speed/gas pedal input at the time...
Yes, it defaults to the "save me gas" side of things because of the Federal Requirements..!!

Just insure the tranny is properly filled and you will learn to love the truck, like I do.

kudos for not cancelling- I had to buy a truck right away as my old truck unexpectedly crapped out- if I was reading this forum in advance , I would be the proud owner of a Frontier, no doubt in my mind- that was a lucky break for me since I really like the Tacoma.

1997 Dodge Dakota, 6 cylinder, 5 speed manual- only two options were stainless steel exhaust and posi-traction rear. That truck was an absolute beast- but it starting to demand more resources than I was willing to give, and I knew I would not get another 5 years out of it so I traded it in- and how pickup trucks changed in 19 years-
