I've recently started to have transmission issues where when I try to select 1st gear when stopped and it won't go into gear. I have to let out the clutch ever so slightly, then it will slide into 1st gear. I think it's probably the synchros.
I've also never replaced the clutch, so I'm wondering when do people typically do this, and trying to understand if I can wait until the clutch goes, before I take it to have this fixed too.
    • Any idea what the issue could be?
    • How much do you think it could cost?
    • How long to the clutches typically last in these?
    • Should I just sell it and get a new Taco?

Honestly unless you're hearing clutch chatter or pilot bearing noises or actually slipping I don't think your clutch is going out.

When was the last time you had a fluid change on it?

I would look into replacing the manual trans shifter bushing at the end of the shift lever. Normally you'd replace that when it's jumping out of gear, but it may help with this issue as well.

Do you have a short throw kit on it? I have issues with mine sometimes because of that, but I have just under 60k on my 6-speed.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I agree
Only about 6k miles ago. Very recently. Before that at 60k.

I'm wondering why letting the clutch turn the transmission just a little bit would allow it to slip in. How do these shifter brushings wear out?

    Nope.

They're just plastic so they wear out with use. Normally if your shifter was popping out of gear that would be a good indicator, but ???
If it had some kind of groove in it or something that might make a difference.

Mine's technically still under warranty so I haven't needed to work on it, but they have replaced the shifter bushing before for me, even though I have the URD short throw shift kit on it... There was also some TSB work done at the same time for clutch bearing issues.

But ya you shouldn't need to do that to get it in 1st!

Oh, and to add... it's a cheaper check fix than clutch or even fluid replacement! If it doesn't work, you can go from there!
