    Hey, all -

For a while there's been oil seeping from between my transmission and transfer case. It's now a full on leak. Is there a way to diagnose this before I take it apart so I've got a fighting chance of having parts on hand to fix it? Can I remove the transfer case without dropping the transmission?

    Thanks

Clean it up real well and see exactly where the problem is before you start pulling stuff apart.

I think it's coming from here. Note that this picture is from a few years ago when I replaced my clutch and I'm including it in this thread just because it shows the spot.
After cleaning up as well as I could I checked the next day and it looked like there was oil running down the driver's side of the transmission right near the transfer case. To make sure I cleaned that area again clear to the top. Today, it's wet with oil again, right up to the top. I put that little spring and cap back on that spot and it's still there. I don't know what the hell it is.

That's your tranny breather. It's leaking from the breather hole?

It means, I'd imagine, your breather cap has failed or was reassembled incorrectly.

there is a gasket where the transfer case shifter cover bolts to the top of the trans. mine leaked out of there. I replaced it with the do it yourself gasket material you can buy at Autozone and smeared it with a little Grey RTV. you cant buy the gasket at the dealers they don't sell them. just trace out the old gasket on the new material and cut it out with scissors

Hey better than my issue I had......I had the output shaft seal between the tranny and the xfer case leak...by that I mean pretty much let go. Would never leak when sitting in a driveway no drips or anything so didn't notice until I heard my Trans whining... jumped underneath and the thing was wet on the bottom and BONE DRY in the trans....Needless to say after putting in a new seal and filling it back up haven't had a leak since and the trans shifts and pulls just fine....but my 1st, 2nd, and, 3rd are now whiny almost like a straight cut gears in a sequential. Or should I say kinda like it sounds in reverse. Guess i'm buying a countershaft and 3 gears (on top of re-build kit).

    Sigh* Just sharing my experience.

Also, Make sure your trans isn't over filled either. Diagnosed a buddies truck with a leak from the top of the trans turns out he over-filled it (filled from the top didn't take the side plug out.....don't ask) and it was leaking out of the shifter Assy.

As far as gasket for the shifter cap i just used black RTV no gasket had 0 issues.

I'll be replacing my clutch as soon as it's warm enough. I'll need to replace the rear engine oil seal as well, is there a part number or will autozone have exactly what I need. I found a nice clutch kit for a good price

I bought a clutch kit and flywheel from Rock auto. I don't remember which one. The flywheel, I think, is heavier than the one I took off - the engine holds RPM a little more between shifts. I don't know if that's good or bad. Also, sometimes when I try to start the truck I get a grind between the starter and the flywheel so I suspect this flywheel isn't of the best quality.

I would advise you to not buy anything from Autozone that you aren't willing to replace under warranty at least once. The quality of their house brand parts is inconsistent at best.

Thanks. Looks easy enough if that's actually my problem.

Is there supposed to be a breather hose there? I don't have a hose.

The breather hose is a small vacuum line that is on the passenger side of the transmission which goes between the transmission and the transfer case. Just to equalize the pressures between the two.

    Part number for Breather: 9093003114

Should the breather hose be visible when I pull the center console out?

Well the schematic I showed is from a 95-98 taco so they may have done away with the breather hose. if it is not there and you were supposed to have one you would see a nipple.
