I recently got a 97 tacoma with 300k on the clock. Just wondering the life expectancy of the auto transmission? It has a 2.7 engine that I'm replacing. I really don't know much about the history of the truck. Thanks.

If it was taken care of properly (fluid changed out in regular intervals) and not abused or used in heavy towing, then it should last you awhile longer. 300k is a lot of miles though

I had a guy tell me not to change the fluid if it hasn't been changed its regular intervals. He said it would give me trouble of I do change it. Has anyone else heard this? Thanks for the input.

Yes, dont do a flush. Instead do multiple pan drain and fills with around 1-2 weeks in between each drain. It will slowly get alot of the old fluid out and get some new fluid in there.

I had a 1996 3.4L v6 before I traded it for my current '06. 301,000 mi on it when I traded it in. Original tranny was still going strong. I realize that this is pretty much where you're at right now so this may not help much but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Would an automatic trans from a 2002 prerunner two wheel drive work in my 97 4x4 tacoma? Also would the engine (2.7) out of the same 02 prerunner switch right over without any modifications? Would I need the ECM from the 02? My 97 does have the coil pack also. Thanks again for the help.

The PreRunners had a transmission coded A340E, the 4x4's an A340F. Essentially the same trans - different tailshafts. Prerunner trans goes straight to the driveshaft, the 4x4's mate up to the transfer case. You can swap tailshafts...

I don't have links, but the process has been discussed in the forums before

I assume a filter change is recommended? Would this be after a few drains?

There is no external filter. You'd have to drop the transmission pan to gain access. The filter is nothing more than a metal screen. While you have the pan off, you can clean the magnets that collect the metal shavings... You will get more fluid out dropping the pan than you would with a simple drain.

Along with removing the pan and cleaning the mesh style screen , you could always disconnect the lower transmission cooling line and drain the converter

I tend to fallow the manufacturer's suggestions. My 2009 has 71,000 and nothing come up in the normal requirements as far as maintenance for transmission. It it's true
now a day I am into my new ride I just acquired a wile back, but I do not want to miss anything as far as maintenance on my old trusted truck. I think nothing is required to do till 100,000. But I may be wrong, please correct me otherwise.
